Maybe Hera had finally reached her breaking point. Every word she hurled at me now sounded like a deliberate attempt to provoke a fight. It was like she was hoping that if we clashed hard enough, it might crack open the door to reconciliation.

All I could think was, How convenient.

That socalled reconciliation always depended on meon my compromises, my willingness to swallow pain in the name of love.

But what happened when the one who had been swallowing their pride decided that they were done? Where was the room for reconciliation then?

Sure,I said flatly. Think whatever you want. Say I’m jealous if that helps you sleep. I really don’t care. You should get some rest.

I didn’t wait for a response. I turned and walked out.

I thought that would be the end of it, but I was mistaken.

Hera came after me and grabbed my arm hard, her voice sharp with rage. Sebastian, my patience has limits! I’ve tolerated your tantrums again and again because I still value this marriage, but that doesn’t give you the right to keep pushing me! If you walk out that door tonight, you’d better be ready to face the consequences!

She sounded like a queen delivering a royal decreecommanding, dangerous.

I wasn’t the trembling subject I used to be, though. Once a mortal stopped worshipping a goddess, she became no different from anyone else.

I turned back and chuckled. Save the drunk theatrics, Ms. Bishop. I’ve got work in the morning. Goodnight.

With a flick of my wrist, I shook off her grip and walked away without looking back.

Behind me, she stood frozeneyes wide with disbelief, maybe even defeat. She never imagined the ordinaryhusband she used to look down on could one day shrug her off like that.

It wasn’t until I disappeared into the elevator that her fury finally broke loose.

Sebastian! I’ll remember this night!she shouted after me. You’ll regret how ridiculous you’ve been! And for the record, jealousy has no place in a marriage! Even if you were the one at fault, as long as it wasn’t something outrageous, I wouldn’t have been jealous!

Her voice echoed through the still night, bouncing off the office walls as I walked away from Edge Inc.

Even outside in the cool air, standing on the curb waiting for a ride, I couldn’t figure out what she’d been trying to prove.

Did she want to make peace? Or was she just trying to convince herself she didn’t care if I moved on? We’re getting divorced. What’s the point of all this now?

I took a deep breath and tried to shake her off and leave her behind like I’d left the building.

However, she wasn’t done. Like a drunken ghost clinging to her last shred of pride, she called again.

Once, seeing her name on my screen would’ve made my heart skip. Now? It just made me tired.

I answered. What now? Haven’t we done enough for one night?

No,she snapped. Not even close. Sebastian, just tell me. What did I do to make you turn so cold, so ruthless?

Hera stood alone at the floortoceiling windows of her office, staring down at the street. Her eyes shimmered with uncertainty. She wanted answers. She still couldn’t believe that the man who had once loved her so deeply could feel like a stranger atter just

a few days.

You didn’t do anything terrible,I said, calm as ever. And this isn’t me throwing a tantrum. It’s just what you said. What did I say?she asked, her voice tightening. She clutched her phone so hard her knuckles turned white.
