Chapter 31

Reality wasted no time proving me wrong.

“Hold on a minute.” Rhea’s eyes gleamed with dangerous cunning. “I’m here for one more thing.”

I sighed. “What now?”

She wrapped her arms around my waist and pressed against me. “I’m sure a man as altruistic as you has no trouble helping a poor damsel like me. So here’s the other thing I need help with: be my boyfriend.”

“What the fu- I mean, are you out of your mind? The first time we met, you were trying to immolate yourself. And now you want to light a different kind of fire on me? Is this some trend with younger folks?” I wriggled free and handed back the banner.

She frowned. “What? You don’t like it?”

I shook my head. “Of course I don’t! I’m already married. This is wrong on so many levels. I don’t even want the banner. Just keep yourself alive from now on, and that’s enough repayment.”

“Heh. Once you accept my banner, you can’t give it back,” she said smugly. “I’m an upstanding young lady who cares about old- school values like honor, which you violated by seeing me naked that day! That means you owe me a responsibility.”

She threatened cheerfully, “You have two options. Accept my banner and your responsibility, or return them, and I’ll sue you for harassment!”

I was shocked. I hadn’t expected her to be so shameless. “Are you kidding me? I saved your life!”

She pictured herself in court, her expression shifting into that of a genuine victim. “Oh, it’s so hard to be a lady these days. I tried to fight you, but you’re a large, strong, imposing young man. I lost, and you did it to me…”

“Are you serious? I was forced to act the way I did! And I didn’t force myself on you! The worst you can say is that I saw you naked by accident!” I argued quickly. “It’s not that serious.”

No luck. Rhea looked on the verge of tears. Why did I keep meeting the craziest women lately?

“Not that serious? It’s my family’s rule! Seeing me naked after pushing me onto the bed is basically the same as the deed itself, bozo! You have to be my boyfriend!” She blinked and leaned close. “You’re getting a sweet deal here, pal. I’m gorgeous and hot.”

“No, wait! I’m married! Please!” I said, exasperated.

She fixed me with a terrifying look of determination. “Who do you think you’re fooling? I don’t believe you. Prove you’re married. Go on.”

How was I supposed to do that? My marriage certificate was at Hera’s house. There was no way I could go back there. The last thing I wanted was to attract more trouble.

But of course, the universe had other plans.

“Sebastian Grimwald!” a voice thundered.
