Chapter 63
Baron leaned back in his chair, the leather creaking softly beneath him as he closed his eyes, deep in thought. He was convinced he had finally unraveled the true meaning behind Julius Grimwald’s cryptic words.
He pondered the sequence of events: right after Baron disclosed his discovery, Sebastian abruptly resigned from his position and plunged headfirst into the business world. Why the sudden change? There was no doubt—it had to be orchestrated by Julius himself. The elderly man wanted Sebastian to carve out his own reputation, to prove himself without any assistance.
It was a test, plain and simple. A challenge to Sebastian’s intelligence, his skill, and his resolve. Powerful families often resorted to such trials, didn’t they?
This realization explained why Baron had invested so readily, without hesitation. On the surface, the financial aspect was clear—money could open doors, buy favors, and generate goodwill. But Baron knew there was more at play. The $670,000 was insignificant to him, mere pocket change. What truly mattered was the opportunity to gauge Sebastian’s business acumen. If the young man proved capable, Baron would stand by him, supporting another rising star in the entrepreneurial world.
And if Sebastian stumbled? Baron would still walk away enriched by the Grimwalds’ favor, which was invaluable in its own right.
Everything was aligning perfectly, as long as he avoided alienating Sebastian. Without question, this was the smartest investment he had ever made.
Baron remained in his office late into the night, meticulously reviewing the contract until he was certain every clause favored Sebastian. Only then did he finally leave, feeling a quiet satisfaction as he returned to the hotel.
Meanwhile, chaos had erupted once again at the Canien household—this time for the second time that day.
James paced back and forth anxiously, his face swollen and marked with fresh bruises. When his wife caught sight of him, her eyes widened in shock.
“What happened to you, dear? Did some thug do this to you?” she exclaimed, her voice trembling with anger.
“Calm down. I’ll take care of you while you talk,” Dorothea said softly, wincing as she gently tended to his injuries. “Are you absolutely sure about this? Mr. Goldman is one of the most powerful men in Astergrad. Why on earth would he behave like that toward some random kid?”
James shook his head, muttering, “I don’t know, and I can’t explain it either.”
His voice wavered with unease. “But if that guy really is a VVIP, we’re done for. We’ve already made an enemy of him.”
Dorothea waved off his worries with a confident smile. “Don’t be ridiculous. Riri’s a Canien! He has to care about her family.”
James’s eyes suddenly brightened, and he straightened up with renewed hope. “Of course! Why didn’t I think of that? We’ve got Riri on our side!”
