“Come on, Ezra. She’s clearly taken. Don’t you get it?”
“Don’t make this awkward, man. We hardly get to hang out like this anymore!”
“Cici made him the designated driver for a reason. Why are you trying to get him drunk?”
Claire’s friends quickly closed in around Ezra, their faces etched with concern. They tried to calm him down, while a few subtly gestured for us to back off and leave the scene.
From the way things were unfolding, it was clear that Ezra was the one refusing to take the hint from Claire, despite her repeated signals to back off. Now I understood why Claire had called me. This guy acted like he owned some claim on her, and it made me uneasy.
I didn’t like the way Ezra’s eyes locked onto me, but since it was Claire’s event and her friends were trying to handle the situation, I decided to step away.
As I turned, Ezra let out a bitter laugh. “So you’re just gonna walk away like that, huh? What, you’re a wuss? Seriously, Cici? You actually picked him?”
His tone shifted from taunting to outright insult, and the room fell silent.
I narrowed my eyes.
Claire tugged gently at my shirt and whispered, “Sebastian, he’s really, really drunk right now. Let’s not waste energy arguing with someone like that, okay? You’ve got things to do tomorrow. Let’s just go.”
Her worry must have pushed him over the edge because he suddenly roared, “What, I can’t call you a wuss now?!”
He raised his hand as if to strike. “Move, wuss! Or did you just die with your eyes open? Too scared to move?”
“My brother-in-law owns this place, idiot! You know what that means? You’re dead! I’ll have someone beat you so badly you’ll be in a wheelchair for life!”
With that, he stormed out, yelling down the hallway like a wild animal, calling for backup.
Claire’s friends exchanged wide-eyed glances and immediately started guiding us toward the exit.
“Dude, you need to get out of here. Now. He wasn’t joking. His brother-in-law really is involved with some gang,” one of them said urgently.
“Yeah, he’s been bragging about it all night. Honestly? We don’t want to find out if it’s true,” another added, glancing nervously behind them.
