Howard struck with relentless force. “This is for being a vile thug who preys on women! And I’m doing this in the name of your sister—the very woman whose life was saved by the man you’re trying to terrorize!”
Blood trickled from Ezra’s split lips. He couldn’t have missed the sharp sting of betrayal: his own brother-in-law had chosen to side with an outsider rather than stand by him.
“You’re unbelievable!” Ezra bellowed, fury crackling in his voice. “I’m calling Miley! You can kiss your marriage goodbye!”
Howard sneered, a harsh laugh escaping him as he delivered another sharp slap to Ezra’s cheek. “Oh, really? You honestly think that’s going to happen?”
Without hesitation, Howard tossed his phone toward Ezra. “Go ahead. Call her. Tell her the guy you’ve been harassing is Sebastian Grimwald—the firefighter who saved your sister two years ago. I’m looking forward to seeing your sister beat you so badly you won’t even recognize yourself in the mirror.”
Ezra’s disbelief was clear, but he dialed the number anyway, shooting me a venomous glare as the call connected. “My sister will stand by me! I *know* she will! Every firefighter’s job is to rescue people from fire—that’s what our taxes pay for!”
He spat out the words bitterly, “What the hell? Who cares about some guy who could have died any day, like expendable fodder?”
The room fell silent, shocked by his callousness. I was likely the only one who remained composed.
To everyone else, Ezra’s words sounded cruel and heartless. To me, they were just the tantrum of a spoiled man-child throwing a fit when things didn’t go his way.
No one was angrier than Howard. His body trembled with barely contained rage before he unleashed a flurry of punches and kicks on Ezra. “You disgusting piece of trash! I’m going to teach you a lesson your parents should have taught you years ago!”
He sneered, “The funniest part is you actually believing Miley would lay a hand on me. She’s never even raised her voice against me, let alone hurt me.”
Howard paid Ezra’s words no mind—he ignored him as he rightly deserved. Instead, he carefully arranged two chairs for Claire and me. “Please, Mr. Grimwald, have a seat. My wife is a huge fan of yours. It’s not often she gets to meet her hero in person.”
I glanced at Ezra’s battered, swollen face and realized my anger had softened enough. “I’m fine. I don’t think this needs to escalate any further. I have an early morning tomorrow—”
“No, you’re not going anywhere!” Ezra growled fiercely. “I’m going to let Miley see all of this, and then you’ll face her wrath.”
