“What are you talking about? We didn’t steal! I told you, this is one big misunderstanding!” Nancy fired back. The officer didn’t back down, his tone firm. “You can explain all that down at the station.”

Panic started to set in for Nancy. There was no way she was going to the police station. And being called a thief? Absolutely not.

“This is wrong! I didn’t take anything! Someone else must have put it in my bag!” Her voice rose. “If you don’t believe me, just-” She almost said “check the cameras,” but the words died in her throat. She remembered–this mall had no security cameras. That fact had seemed like a lucky break earlier. Now, it was a nightmare.

She was trapped.

Her eyes darted to Carolyn, who was just standing there, watching calmly like she had nothing to do with it. Rage boiled inside Nancy.

Wasn’t Carolyn the one who asked for her help in teaching Chloe a lesson? So why was she acting like a clueless spectator now?

Up on the level above, Landon had seen the whole thing. The moment Chloe got close to that girl from the Steffes family, his jaw had nearly hit the floor.

He hadn’t even really seen how Chloe did it–it was that fast.

Her movements were smooth. Flawless. Since when did Chloe have skills like that?

He was seriously impressed.

“Man, did you know she could do that? Is that why you said what you did before?” Landon’s excitement grew. “I mean, I was already shocked finding out she could do professional–level design. But this? She’s full of surprises!”

Eugene just gave him a sidelong glance. A chill ran down Landon’s neck. Right, maybe he shouldn’t be praising the woman Eugene liked so enthusiastically in front of him.

“Eugene,” Landon cleared his throat, changing the subject. “You just let Belle’s staff give her that crazy expensive gift, using that weak excuse about ‘hidden perks!” He tried to sound serious. “How much do you actually know about Chloe? And what does she know about you? Why not just spell out your motives for her directly? With who you are… if she’s just in it for the money, once she finds out, she might never let go…”

“In it for the money?” Eugene repeated the phrase slowly.

Landon nodded. “If your identity gets out, you’ll have women lining up. I mean, you have enough money to buy a small country. If you want something, you just get it…”

Before he could finish, Eugene cut him off, his voice calm.

“If that’s really what she wants, it would actually make things simpler.”

Landon stared, completely thrown. Was Eugene seriously saying it would be a good thing if Chloe was a gold digger?

Eugene glanced at him. “I have more than enough money, anyway.” With that, he turned and walked away.

Landon stood there for a second, processing Eugene’s words. Well, a big shot is really on another level!

Shaking his head, he hurried to catch up.

Back at the jewelry boutique, surrounded by the manager, staff, and police, Nancy was out of options. She couldn’t admit she’d tried to set Chloe up, only to have it backfire spectacularly.

Fury burned in her chest. She’d never been so humiliated.

She clenched her fists, her expression shifting as she made a decision.

“Fine, I’ll take the ruby ring. Just tell me the price. I’ll pay for it right now.” Her voice was tight. “I’m buying it.”

So what if it was a ruby ring? Merely tens of thousands of dollars. Pocket change. She was a Steffes. She had more money than she knew what to do with.

Just wait! After this, she’d make sure her family’s company cut all ties with Belle Mall. They’d be blacklisted for good.

“Ms. Steffes.” The manager’s voice was cool and professional. “As a VIP, you’re aware of our policies. Anyone caught attempting theft must pay ten times the item’s price if they wish to purchase it.” A faint, cold smile touched his lips. “We’ve never had an incident like this since we opened. You’re our first, Ms. Steffes.”
