Ten times the price? Fine! If the ring cost tens of thousands, then ten times that would be a few hundred thousand. She could handle that. She’d just think of it as buying another designer bag. If these people were going to be this greedy, she’d let them have their moment.

Swallowing her pride, Nancy stepped forward, snatched her card from the counter, and tossed. it at the clerk. “Just run it. I’m paying now.”

The clerk looked toward the manager, who gave a slight nod. She took the card over to the payment machine.

“This ruby ring is a new arrival. The original price is 438,000 dollars. Ten times that comes to 4,380,000 dollars,” the clerk explained as she prepared to process the payment.

“What? Over four million? You’re scamming me! There’s no way this ring is worth that much!” Nancy shot back, making a move to grab her card back.

That card had five million on it–her mother had just given her this quarter’s allowance. If she spent it all now, how was she supposed to get through the rest of the month?

The clerk pulled the card out of her reach and glanced again at the manager.

“Ms. Steffes, are you not gonna pay? You gonna buy this thing, or do we need to take this to the police station?” The manager’s tone was growing impatient.

Nancy fell silent. She glared at the ruby ring, the number “438” making her feel sick. Chloe, I won’t forget this. This isn’t over.

“I’ll pay,” Nancy forced out through gritted teeth. She was clenching her fists so hard her nails bit into her palms.

The clerk ignored her and swiped the card.

A wave of anger, humiliation, and panic washed over Nancy as she cursed silently a hundred times.

“The card’s declined,” the clerk said flatly.

“What?” Nancy was stunned. Her eyes widened as she stared at the clerk. “That’s impossible! There’s five million on that card–I just got it! You’re lying!”

Without a word, the clerk entered the amount again and swiped. Same result: transaction failed. Insufficient funds.

Seeing it with her own eyes, Nancy froze.

“Officer, perhaps you can assist?” The manager then turned to the staff. “Let’s get things back to normal. We’ve wasted enough time, and it’s affecting business.”

The police moved to take Nancy in for questioning. She dodged their hands, stepping back hastily. “Don’t touch me! This is a setup!”

She started pointing fingers–at the mall staff, the manager, and even the customers watching the scene.

“You’re all in on this! I just got this card; there’s no way it doesn’t work. Run it again! I want my lawyer here!” Nancy’s eyes swept over everyone in defiance. There was no way her card was the problem. If it was, the mall staff had to be behind it.

She needed to call her parents. They’d fix this.

Hands trembling with rage, she grabbed her phone and dialed her mom.

The phone rang several times before it was picked up at last.

“Mom, I-”

“Nancy, where are you? Come home, now! Something terrible has happened. Your dad’s company suddenly ran out of cash. He can’t cover the debts. All our partners canceled their orders. We’re facing massive compensation claims… All the accounts are frozen.

“Nancy… we’re bankrupt!”

Her mother’s voice was choked with tears. In the background, her father’s angry shouts could be heard.

“What?” Nancy felt the floor drop out from under her. She couldn’t process what she was hearing.

Her family… was bankrupt? How was that possible?

Her family’s business had always been doing well. Her dad had said they were on track to make billions this year. Bankrupt? Such an obscure term–something she’d never even considered.
