“Carolyn! You have to help me! Please!” Nancy desperately tried to grab Carolyn’s arm. “Just pay for this thing! If you pay, they’ll let me go!”

Carolyn just stood there, frozen. The news of Nancy’s family going bankrupt had completely short–circuited her brain.

How did everything fall apart so quickly?

Nancy wanted her to pay? How could she possibly do that?

She hardly had any money of her own. Scott kept her on a very tight budget. Her allowance was small. And she’d just started in the entertainment industry and was a nobody. That was the whole reason she stuck with a spoiled rich girl like Nancy in the first place.

“Nancy, this isn’t my problem. How can I help you?” Carolyn put on a troubled face. “You’re the one who took the ring.”

“You…!”

Nancy’s eyes widened in pure shock. She couldn’t believe Carolyn would say that.

Wasn’t it Carolyn who asked her to teach Chloe a lesson? Now that things had blown up, was going to play the innocent bystander?

“You were the one who told me to do this! Stop pretending!” Nancy struggled violently, trying to lunge at Carolyn. The sight of Carolyn’s fake innocent expression made her blood boil.

Carolyn flinched away, putting on a scared and wronged look. “I honestly don’t know what you’re talking about. Weren’t we just going to get something to eat today? Why are you saying these things?”

“You liar!” Nancy thrashed harder, aiming for Carolyn.

The police officers quickly restrained her, stopping her from causing more chaos.

“You need to come with us to the station to assist with the investigation.”

Another officer looked at Carolyn. “You too.”

“Okay, officer,” Carolyn replied softly, acting as if she had nothing to do with the situation. She followed them out, completely ignoring Nancy’s furious screams and struggles, as if it were all background noise.

Carolyn had already texted her mother, Monique, asking her to come and bail her out.

After leaving Belle Mall with Robert, Chloe didn’t pull away right away. She pulled over and parked on the street across from the mall’s main entrance.

From their spot, they had a perfect view of the mall’s grand doors.

Chloe kept her eyes fixed on the entrance, as if waiting for something to happen.

Robert watched her, curious.

“Mommy, are you having second thoughts? Wishing you’d taken more of that free stuff from Belle Mall? Their ‘surprise deal‘ was pretty amazing.”

“Robert, see if you can find out who really owns Belle Mall,” Chloe said, her voice quiet.

Robert pouted. “That’s easy. I can just look it up on my phone.”

“Those are just the names of the frontmen. I want to know who’s really in charge behind the scenes.” Chloe’s eyes grew serious. That whole “surprise reward“… was it really just a lucky break?

No way. Something else was going on. The general manager himself came out, and his attitude did a complete one–eighty. It definitely wasn’t how he’d act toward an average winner.

Someone was pulling the strings.

But who?

Could it be…

Chloe’s hands tightened on the steering wheel as the possibility crossed her mind.

Just then, a familiar car caught her eye from the side.

She focused on it. The car came to a stop, and someone got out of the passenger side, standing by the door.

It was Bruce. She’d recognized the car the moment she saw it. It was Eugene’s.

Bruce was here? So that meant Eugene was at Belle Mall too?
