Chapter 122 A Failed Rescue

Arthur was stunned by the look on Chloe’s face. He opened his mouth to speak, but her next words cut him off, making everything he’d just said sound completely worthless.

“If my invitation is really a fake, then I’d prefer to let security throw me out,” Chloe said with a casual shrug. “I don’t need this gentleman’s help. Not even a little bit.”

“You…” Arthur’s expression darkened instantly.

He was the president of Myers Group! When had he ever been publicly disrespected like this? Chloe was completely out of line.

Seeing Arthur step in to defend Chloe, Jennifer felt a chill in her heart. Was Arthur still hung up on his ex? He actually spoke up for her at a moment like this.

She was boiling with frustration. She wanted nothing more than to march over and wipe that confident look right off Chloe’s face.

After everything she’d done for Arthur, all the effort she’d put in, he still couldn’t see her worth?

Chloe’s arrogant tone almost made Jennifer laugh out loud.

What did that shameless woman have left now that the Myers family had cut her off? Her pretty face?

“Arthur, why even bother?” Jennifer said, reaching for his hand. “Chloe clearly doesn’t want our help. We’re just wasting our kindness.”

As Arthur stepped back, Jennifer linked her arm through his, throwing a defiant look Chloe’s

way.

It was a clear power move–showing everyone that she was the woman by Arthur’s side, the one he presented to the world.

Chloe was nothing. An outsider who didn’t belong in their circle. Just some country girl who didn’t know her place.

Arthur stared daggers at Chloe, but she didn’t even seem to notice them anymore. She looked utterly unconcerned, as if this was all beneath her. Maybe it was her last shred of pride talking.

Fine! He’d see how far she could push this without his protection.

“Chloe, those are your words. I told you–no second chances. Since that’s how it is, please escort this person who snuck in with a fake invitation out,” Arthur said, glancing sideways at the man

in the suit.

The man’s face was stern, his patience with Chloe wearing thin.

“Remove her,” he ordered the staff. “And report this to Mr. Jimenez on your way. I want to know how his door team made such an amateur mistake.” His voice was icy. “Whoever let her in gets a pay deduction.”

A faint smile touched Chloe’s lips. “I’d think twice about that if I were you. You might be the one looking for a new job by the end of the night.”

The suit guy scoffed. “Are you threatening me? I’m the internal affairs manager for Mistveil Manor. I’m running this entire event. You think someone like you can get me fired? Keep dreaming.”

“If you’re only in charge of internal affairs, then I guess it makes sense you’re clueless about what the higher–ups decided,” Chloe retorted, her smirk widening. “But if you force me to leave, you’ll be the one begging for a second chance later.”

The nearby guests exchanged curious glances.

How could she still be so calm and self–assured at a time like this?

Did she have nerves of steel, or did she know something they didn’t?

Arthur thought Chloe was being reckless. She was making a fool of herself, and by extension, him.

“Chloe, that’s enough. Stop this charade. I’ll have my driver take you home. Leave while you still have some dignity.” He lowered his voice.

“If you keep this up until Mr. Slade arrives, things will get much worse.” Everyone in their social circle knew about Joseph’s temper. When he was in a good mood, anything went. When he was ticked off, nothing flew.

“Arthur, have some shame! Quit running around acting tough in front of me–let alone dragging a bunch of random people with you!” Chloe cranked up her voice. “Aren’t the ones making a fool of themselves the jerks who snitched on me and talked trash behind my back?”

As she spoke, her gaze swept over Jennifer and Madilyn.
