Scott said nothing–just like he always did–letting Monique cry into her hands, the sound of her sobs filling the quiet living room. Usually, once her tears dried, he’d cave: shower her with expensive gifts, press his credit cards into her palm, do whatever it took to smooth things over and make the noise stop.

Monique thought this time would be the same. But the second her sobs tapered off into sniffles, Scott grabbed the crystal glass from the coffee table and hurled it against the wall.

It shattered with a deafening crash, shards exploding across the floor.

Monique and Carolyn froze, both staring at the mess in stunned silence. Carolyn, especially, felt her blood run cold. He’d already snapped at her in the car on the way home, his voice sharp enough to make her flinch. She thought her mom would stand up for her at home and Scott would give in. She never saw this coming.

“Scott, how dare you-” Monique stood up, ready to speak, when his anger exploded.

“Are you two done? All you do is complain all day. What have you been doing day in and day out?” Scott looked straight at Monique, his face full of anger. “Carolyn’s useless because she never tries. If she had any real ability, I wouldn’t be so embarrassed.”

Carolyn’s face turned red. She stared at the floor.

Monique was shocked. Since when did Scott talk to her like this?

“You’ve spoiled her since she was little. Keep going like this and you’ll ruin her. She’s good for nothing but causing trouble. Every now and then I think–what the hell did I do to have a kid like this?” Scott turned toward the stairs. As he passed Monique, he stopped.

“The company’s losing money. I don’t know how much longer I can keep this up. If you really want a divorce, fine. I’ll sign right now.”

He went upstairs without looking back and slammed the door hard. He was really angry.

Monique stood there, stunned. After all these years of him giving in, he had finally snapped.

“Mom, what do we do now? Are we just going to let Chloe push us around? Do I really have to be a cleaner?”

Carolyn stared at her mother, hoping she would say, “No way,” that she’d never let Chloe win like this.

But Monique said, “Go. You have to go.”

“Your dad’s angry now. If you go to the company, even as a cleaner, stay close to Scott. Be the good, sensible daughter. Isn’t that better?” Monique’s voice turned sharp. “That bitch Chloe is gonna get in on the company’s management. Next she’ll be the vice president, sticking her nose into company business. Use this chance to make her regret it. Isn’t that the real win?”

Carolyn blinked, then smiled.

“If all the shareholders turn against Chloe, she’ll have to give up that thirty percent,” Monique went on. “She’s arrogant enough to try taking Lewis Group. If she’d stayed outside quietly, I wouldn’t care. But since she’s back, I won’t let her live easy. She won’t be comfortable, that’s for

sure.”

Outside the operating room, Arthur couldn’t stop pacing. He was wound tight.

Donald stood nearby, watching the clock. Charles had been in surgery for over an hour. Whether it would go well, whether he’d wake up–no one knew.
