Finished

“What a pity,” Jennifer sighed, her voice laced with a hint of bitterness as she cast a sidelong glance at Arthur, who remained ensconced in silence. “No matter how hard I strive, it seems I can never grasp what I truly desire.” Her words hung in the air, heavy with unspoken emotions. “Since you find us so distasteful, and my efforts fail to capture even a flicker of your attention, perhaps it’s time for Jenarth and me to leave this city for good.”

She paused, letting the weight of her statement settle between them like an uninvited guest. “Once we’re gone, you’ll be free to pursue Chloe to your heart’s content. We’ll be nothing but a distant memory, a mere inconvenience you can forget.”

Arthur remained seated on the sofa, an immovable statue of indifference. No matter the storm of words Jennifer unleashed, his expression remained unchanged—an inscrutable mask that suggested he had already reconciled himself with the inevitable outcome.

“We must be… unwanted,” Jennifer murmured, her voice quivering as she inhaled deeply, trying to steady herself against the tide of emotion swelling within her.

She placed a hand delicately on her lower abdomen, as if cradling a secret. “I had hoped to share some joyful news with you, but it seems that hope has been extinguished. Maybe… maybe this baby just wasn’t meant to be.”

With a heavy heart, she turned, intending to retreat into the bedroom to fetch Jenarth, her mind racing with the implications of her words.

“Wait,” Arthur’s voice cut through the silence, sharp and sudden. He sprang to his feet, grasping her wrist with a grip that was both firm and desperate. “What did you just say?” His eyes bore into hers, a mixture of confusion and urgency swirling within them.

Jennifer kept her back to him, her heart pounding in her chest. His reaction spoke volumes; she didn’t need to say anything more. Everything was unfolding according to her carefully laid plans.

She could wield this pregnancy as a tether, binding Arthur to her in ways he couldn’t begin to understand. The truth was that nothing had transpired between them that night—but he believed it had, and that guilt would now fester. With a child in the equation, that guilt would only intensify.

“Arthur, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kept this from you,” she stammered, her voice cracking as tears began to spill down her cheeks, her shoulders shaking with the weight of her sorrow. “I’ve tried so hard to be the woman you wanted. I wanted you to see me differently. But now… it feels like we’re just drifting further apart.”

“Jennifer, please. Answer me. What baby?” Arthur pressed, his voice taut with tension as he held her wrist in a vice-like grip.

“Arthur, you’re hurting me,” Jennifer managed to choke out, her voice barely above a whisper.

Realizing his grip was too harsh, Arthur immediately released her, a flicker of regret crossing his features.

“Jennifer, what have you been hiding?”

“Arthur, I…” She turned to face him slowly, her lips trembling with the weight of her confession. “Maybe that night was a mistake, but… I’m pregnant.”

“What?” Arthur’s voice was barely a whisper, his body frozen in shock as disbelief washed over him.
