Jennifer didn’t resist, allowing the man’s rough hands to roam freely over her body. Everywhere he touched seemed to carry that same repulsive odor.
Consumed by lust, he grew increasingly frantic, ready to take what he wanted. But just as he was about to push further, he noticed Jennifer’s complete lack of response–she was as still and unresponsive as a corpse.
“What’s wrong? Not in the mood?” he grunted.
Jennifer ignored him. She shoved him aside and walked deeper into the room under the dim glow of a single nightlight.
The space was nearly empty, save for a stained, worn–out mattress surrounded by piles of trash. There was hardly room to stand. The only intact piece of furniture was an old wooden chair.
Jennifer pulled the chair over and sat down. She picked up the man’s half–empty pack of cigarettes from the table, lit one, and took a long drag. The harsh, cheap smoke made her nauseous at first, but she soon adjusted. She began flicking the lighter on and off absentmindedly.
“Click… click…” The sound echoed in the silence.
“So? When are you marrying Arthur?” the man asked, settling onto the mattress with a snort. “If you’re not getting married, at least squeeze a fat settlement out of him. The guy’s loaded— taking a chunk of his money shouldn’t be a problem.”
Jennifer looked up and studied his face in the dim light.
He had coarse features and a rugged complexion. It had clearly been a while since he’d bothered to groom himself–stubble covered his jaw.
On closer inspection, this was the same man who had appeared with Jennifer in that short surveillance clip that had circulated online–the one arguing with her in the footage.
Jennifer remained silent. Annoyed, the man leaned closer, his expression turning angry. “You said the money was coming soon. If Arthur won’t marry you, he’ll at least pay you off. So what’s the deal now? Have you got the money or not?”
His rapid–fire questions revealed his impatience.
Jennifer set the lighter down and met his gaze. Just looking at him put her in a foul mood.
This man had ruined what was once a promising life.

Back when she was studying abroad, she had dreamed of becoming a world–renowned pianist. During her studies, she had been charmed by his appearance.
At first, he had treated her well–so attentive that she thought she’d found true love. But he turned out to be worthless. He had used her repeatedly, and in the end, she was the one paying to support him—enduring his endless demands.
Time after time, whether he wanted money or her body, she never had the right to refuse.
The bitter irony was that this lowlife was the father of her children–Jenarth’s biological father, and also the father of the child she was now carrying.
She thought she had left him behind for good. But during the recent media storm, her location had been exposed, and he had tracked her down. To keep him quiet, she had given in to him- and that was how she had ended up pregnant.
In a twisted way, she supposed she ought to thank him for showing up when he did. Without that, she never could have deceived Arthur.
Now, she was so close to getting everything she wanted—and this man was threatening to ruin it all. There was no way she would let that happen.
Take the money and run? That was all he cared about now.
The thought infuriated her. How had she sunk this low? She had fought too hard for what she had to simply walk away empty–handed.
