“My mother left that jewelry to me. What I do with it is my call. You need to return it.” Chloe looked steadily at Monique, her hand extended, voice even.
Monique opened her mouth to protest, but Scott cut her off sharply.
“Your mother left those things for you. Go ahead, sell them, squander the money if you want. I won’t stop you.” His gaze was hard. “Chloe, you’re so stubborn. Once you walk out that door, you are no heiress of the Lewis family. Don’t you dare come crawling back later.”
Having said his piece, he snapped at Monique, “Go get her things. Now.”
Monique wanted to refuse. She’d held onto those pieces for years; in her mind, they were hers. Handing them over to this ungrateful wretch was unthinkable. But one look at Scott’s bloodshot eyes–she’d never seen him so enraged–and her courage failed. She turned and hurried upstairs to retrieve the jewelry.
Soon after, the lawyer arrived with the formal severance documents, and Monique returned, carrying the jewelry that had belonged to Chloe’s mother.
“Chloe, a word of advice.” Monique couldn’t resist a final jab as she placed several ornate boxes on the table. “These pieces are worth over 20 million dollars. If you blow through that in a few days, your mother will be rolling in her grave.”
Chloe’s eyes swept over the boxes. These were her mother’s cherished possessions.
She lifted her gaze, letting it rest on Carolyn for a moment before looking away, her expression unreadable.
“Mr. Lewis, once signed, this agreement is effective immediately. Thereafter, the two of you…” the lawyer began to explain the procedure.
“Be quiet. Your commentary isn’t required.” Scott brushed the lawyer off, snatched the pen, scrawled his signature, and shoved the agreement across to Chloe. “Sign it. Take your trash and get out.”
Chloe scanned the document. The terms were unequivocal—a complete severance of all ties with the Lewis family, with no claims on either side. They were ensuring she couldn’t ask for another cent.
Perfect for her.
This was what she’s been aiming for all along with this fake act. A clean break was essential; otherwise, all her efforts would be wasted.
Chloe picked up the pen and signed her name with a final, decisive stroke before handing the pen back to the lawyer.
Scott stared at Chloe’s impassive face, his fury reigniting. “It’s done. You are nothing to the Lewis family now. Get out of my sight.”
Without a word, Chloe stepped forward, gathered her mother’s jewelry boxes carefully into her arms, and
turned to leave. She didn’t look back.
Watching Chloe’s retreating back, Monique clenched her fists. Over 20 million dollars in jewelry, and that little bitch had just walked away with it.Damn her!

She’d have to find a way to get it all back. Now that Chloe was formally disowned, and with the Myers family. in turmoil–Charles in a coma and Arthur’s scandals all over the internet–who would bother with some discarded country girl?
So… if Chloe were to meet with an unfortunate accident out there, and the jewelry were to go missing… well, that would seem only natural, wouldn’t it?
Scott watched Chloe’s figure until it disappeared. A faint, unwelcome whisper echoed in his mind: no matter how troublesome she was, Chloe was still his and Kristina Thomas’s child. Kristina had been such a gentle soul, so cultured–how had they produced a daughter like this?
He remembered a young Chloe, sweet and obedient, always clinging to their side. If she hadn’t gotten lost, never been sent to the countryside to fend for herself…
If Kristina were still alive and could see what had become of their daughter, her heart would break…
The memory of Kristina’s death sent a sharp pang through his chest. Overwhelmed, he swayed slightly on
his feet.
“Scott!” Monique rushed to support him, her voice laced with concern. “I told you, you never should have brought that girl back. And now she’s burned her bridges with the Myers family too! She’s just a wild, stubborn country bumpkin. Now that she’s cast out, who knows what disgraceful things she’ll sink to?”
