When Mike and Lexie got back to the Winslow clan grounds, he was still sulking. He had done all the grunt work on that trip and didn't get a dime out of it somehow.
Sitting in the car, he cast Lexie a sideways glance. It was full of quiet complaints.
She caught his look and raised an eyebrow. "What? Don't tell me you're backing out now. You said I could have the whole payment."
Mike wanted to go back on it—of course, he did—but his pride wouldn't let him. "I didn't say anything! And I'm definitely keeping my word."
He tried to play it cool like he didn't care at all, but Lexie burst into a laugh.
She casually tossed a bank card into his lap and said, "Come on, what kind of person do you think I am? This is your share—everything squared. That's how we do things, anyway."
He stared at the card in his hand. Although he knew it wasn't much, it still made his eyes light up.
"Hey, you were the one who gave it up. Don't say I didn't offer."
Lexie scoffed, and the two of them kept bickering all the way back to the village.
As they arrived, Dalton squinted at them with a warm, grandfatherly smile. "Back already, Lexie? Everything taken care of?"
She patted her chest confidently. "Come on, Uncle Dalton, when have I not come through?"
She then leaned in closer and looked at Dalton, wide-eyed and hopeful. "By the way, do you remember how you said Mike could take the millennium-old corpse soil if he helped out with clan work?
"That still stands, right?"
Dalton narrowed his eyes as he looked at her, gaze flashing with something unreadable. He stayed quiet for a moment, then asked, "Do you want to give it to him?"
Lexie nodded. "I brought him here for a reason, so I don't see why I wouldn't let him have it. Besides, it's not like he's gonna do anything shady with it.
"If he actually pulls it off, it'll count as a merit for the clan, too."
She was ready to pull out every big-name ancestor in the book to convince him, knowing how rigid the rules could get, but to her surprise, Dalton just nodded without fuss.
"Let him have it, then."
That was it?
Lexie and Mike were stunned, but delight soon flashed across their faces. She was so excited that she hugged Dalton's arm.
"So, that's a yes? Uncle Dalton, I knew you were the most reasonable one! We'll go harvest the soil—right now!" she exclaimed, jumping and pulling Mike along, as if afraid Dalton would renege on his words.
