Chapter 9
Clutching my mom’s arm, James wept uncontrollably.
“Sis, please convince Emma to take me back. I miss her so much. Please help us get
remarried.”
“I’ll be completely devoted to her from now on. I’ll never look at another woman again!
Please, Sis, please help me…”
My mother, eyes blazing with fury, slapped him hard across the face twice in rapid
succession.
“Remarry? You wasted three years of her life and now you want to waste her entire
future?!”
“James, you’re garbage! Emma was young and naive, but what’s your excuse? You watched her grow up! How could you do this? You’re an absolute animal!”
“If I had known what kind of person you’d become, I would have never let my parents
adopt you from that orphanage! Get out! If I ever see you again, I’ll beat you every time!
GET OUT!”
As James was stumbling out, shoulders slumped and looking utterly dejected, Noah and I
were returning home.
He froze when he saw us, his eyes immediately reddening.
Like a madman, he tried to separate Noah and me, then suddenly attacked Noah.
It took all my strength to pull them apart.
James watched how I cared for Noah and seemed to realize something. With tear–filled eyes, he confronted me.

Chapter 9
“Emma, when you married him, it wasn’t just to spite me, was it? You already loved him back then, didn’t you?”
He laughed bitterly, painfully. “No wonder you were so eager to divorce me! Just like Sophia, you already had your next man lined up!”
Hearing this, the veins in Noah’s neck bulged visibly with anger. He never allowed anyone to insult me, so without a moment’s hesitation, he lunged forward, grabbed James’s collar and thundered, “Watch your mouth, James! What do you mean ‘next man‘? You were the one who cheated first! You married Emma three years ago, but did you fulfill any of your responsibilities as a husband?”
“She’s a doctor who would come home exhausted from long shifts and still cook and clean for you! And during that accident, Emma’s leg was broken–she couldn’t run! But you didn’t even look at her. You ran to save Sophia, who wasn’t even hurt! If I hadn’t been there, Emma would be DEAD!”
“That explosion was deafening–how could you not have heard it?!”
These words stopped James cold.
His expression became agonized as he stared at me, tears streaming down his face.
“I didn’t know… I didn’t know your leg was broken…”
He stepped forward with outstretched arms, trying to embrace me, but I immediately backed away, my cold, distant gaze making it clear there was no warmth left in my heart
for him.
James asked desperately, “Emma, please… can’t we just wipe the slate clean and try again? I know I messed up badly. I swear I’ll do better by you this time.”
“No, I don’t need you anymore,” I said, shaking my head before firmly pointing toward the door, signaling him to leave. James’s lips quivered, but he said nothing as he turned and walked out. His hunched silhouette as he left was the picture of devastation.
But this time, I felt no sympathy,
