Before I made the vall, I had naively planned to ask Ethan’s parents if they knew their son had been telling such a monstrous lie Looking back, I realized how foolish I was. The consecutive blows had left me surprisingly calm. I looked up at him and asked, “Ethan, tell me the truth. Is there anything else you’ve been lying to me about?
You want to know? line I’ll tell you everything.” Ethan, who had once pretended to help me quit smoking, seemed to have given up on everything after his hes were exposed. He nonchalantly lit a cigarette in front of me, not bothering to hide it, and began puffing away. “The house is rented. The car is rented. My parents are farmers in my hometown. I’m not an only child–I have two younger brothers and a sister, all still in school, all depending on me to take care of them. I’m not a senior executive at Spencer Group, just a regular employee with a monthly salary of 5,000 USD. I was going to tell you all of this after you had the baby, but I never expected you’d find out now.”
After Ethan finished speaking, the room fell into a heavy silence. My tears had dried up, and the tautness from the dried tear stains on my face made me appear even colder. This was the adult world, it seemed. Even when your heart feels torn apart, you have to keep up the appearance of calm. I stood up, walked toward the room, grabbed the suitcase I had already packed, and walked toward the door without looking back.
“Marina Miller, I can’t believe you’re this kind of person!” Ethan shouted, his voice full of fury. “You married me for the car and the house. Now that you know they’re gone and I have so many burdens at home, you want to leave me, right? Just like all women!”
I stopped in my tracks, the words I had been holding back flooding back into my throat, but I swallowed them down, only saying quietly, “Ethan, you’re disgusting.”
“Disgusting? I’m disgusting?!” Ethan shouted, his voice growing louder. “I did all of this for you! If you hadn’t insisted on marrying a man with a house and car, do you think I would’ve had to lie to you?” He reached for my shoulder, forcefully pushing me to the ground. “So you want to leave, huh? Fine!”
The sudden shove sent me stumbling, and I fell heavily to the floor. Before I could get back up, Ethan grabbed something from somewhere–a thick notebook–and threw it at me like a weapon. I looked up just in time for the leather cover to hit my nose with a sharp thud. The pain in my nose made blood and tears surge out at once. Just as I started to react, I felt a sharp tug on my hair, and Ethan yanked my head up forcefully.
Look at this,” he sneered, holding the notebook in front of me. “I’ve got everything written down–every penny I’ve spent on renting the house, the car, the gifts, the transfer payments, and even those two extra roles I hired for the last three months. All of it was on loans. If you want a divorce, first pay me back for all of this! Otherwise, I’ll plaster your naked photos all over the streets and alleys, let everyone see what kind of slut you are–someone who was already
sleeping around before marriage!”
In that moment, all rational thought flew out the window. I lost it completely, thrashing around like a madwoman, hurling every curse word I had never said before in my life. I smashed everything I could find in the room, tearing the marriage certificate into pieces. I wasn’t just fighting with Ethan, but with the monster he had become. Unfortunately, the difference in strength between men and women is too great. Before long, I found myself losing the battle, with Ethan pinning me to the ground and beating me mercilessly. He straddled me, choking me, slamming my head into the floor again and again.
Finally, it was the landlady, who had been knocking on our door earlier, who heard the noise and called the police.
