Winifred quickly approached them. "Officers, I'm the one who called. They started it."
She pointed at the tattooed man and the woman.
The officer glanced at the tattooed man, who was bruised and battered, his face covered in cuts and his leg looking lame. Then he looked at Yvan, who only had a few bruises on his face but was otherwise unharmed.
The tattooed man tried to argue. "No, he's the one who beat me up. Do I look like I was the one starting a fight?"
With those tattoos, you look exactly like a troublemaker, the officer thought.
He waved a hand. "Take them all in."
Winifred quickly said, "Officer, can I come a little later? I have a child with me, and I'm afraid the police station will scare her. I'd like to take her home first."
She pointed to the little girl sitting nearby. Delia had been very good, staying put just as she'd been told.
The officer glanced over. "Alright, but be quick about it."
Winifred thanked him, gave Yvan a look, and then ran over to Delia.
Yvan started to follow, but the officer stopped him. "Your wife can go. You're coming with us to the station."
Yvan's lips twitched, but he didn't argue, simply turning and walking toward the police car.
Winifred first called Nancy to explain everything that happened, then apologized. "Nancy, I'm so sorry. I never expected something like this to happen."
She was supposed to be watching her child, but instead, she'd gotten her into trouble.
"It's okay, it's okay," Nancy said quickly. "As long as you and Delia are alright. It's not your fault; those people were just awful. Bring Delia to me. I'm almost done here, and I can take her home."
Winifred hung up, dropped Delia off with Nancy, and headed for the police station.
Nancy said, "Why don't I take Delia and go with you? I'm finished here anyway. That man stood up for you and Delia. As her mother, I should go thank him."
