And her grandmother would still be alive.
Karen had also returned home.
Their relationship had always been lukewarm, and Karen had even mocked her when she heard she was dating Yvan, warning her not to be fooled.
"Was the baby Yvan's?" Karen asked.
Winifred didn't speak, but her silence was an answer.
She expected Karen to mock her like everyone else, or shame her like Queena had.
But surprisingly, Karen said nothing against her. Instead, she started cursing Yvan, calling him a scumbag.
She insisted it was all Yvan's fault, that Winifred shouldn't blame herself or be depressed.
She took her to the hospital, sat with her during therapy sessions, and came home every week just to talk.
Gradually, Winifred began to heal.
She went back to school, burying that painful memory deep inside.
Until she met Yvan again, and his relentless pursuit forced her to peel back the layers of her buried past.
Winifred's tears fell freely as she clutched the ultrasound printout tightly in her hand…
The next day at the hospital, Winifred ran into Nancy.
Nancy greeted her with a wide smile. "Winifred! Do you think you could ask your friend when he's free? I'd really like to treat you both to dinner. I called him last night to invite him, but I think he was just being polite when he refused. He helped me so much, and even though it was for your sake, I feel terrible not showing my appreciation. You know him better, so could you ask him to pick a time? My treat."
Winifred was stunned. "Nancy, you called him? How did you get his number?"
"From Delia, of course," Nancy said. "She has his business card."
Winifred dug her nails into her palm.
Nancy had called him, which meant her lie had been exposed. He must know she'd deceived him.
But it didn't matter. Let him know. Winifred wasn't afraid of Yvan. What right did he have to blame her? She just wanted nothing to do with him.
