Tristan's punch landed Sean in the hospital for three days. It was during then that he learned who Charlotte had become.
She was now the winner of the World SA Boxing Championship, and the number one female boxer in the country.
At that, Sean fell in a daze, as memories he'd long tried to bury came flooding back.
Back then, Charlotte had been invincible in the underground boxing ring. Some well-known boxing agents even threw themselves over her, singing her praises and trying to sign her up, in hopes of leading her into a professional path.
She should've had a bright future then, but Sean refused to allow it. He was afraid that she'd abandon him for good once she'd seen the outside world and tasted freedom.
So, when Charlotte hurt her leg, Sean deliberately claimed he was short on money and only took her to an ordinary hospital. Later on, he even persuaded her to stay home and be content with living a life just like a housewife.
He caged her in, causing her to wither and be kept pliant under his care. Yet when he achieved fame and success, he turned around and despised her for being useless.
Sean felt hollow and remorseful. He tore out his IV and headed once more toward the orphanage.
…
The orphanage was packed with people this time. Countless fans crowded the gate, eyes bright with excitement and reverence.
"Oh my god, I can't believe Ms. Summer is actually from Salvia! I'm about to pass out in joy!"
"She's truly inspiring and powerful! Of course, she's also a perfect match to Mr. Clayment!"
Sean couldn't bear to listen. He looked at the big oak tree in the courtyard, recalling the past 20 years when Charlotte and him had depended on each other.
Eventually, he couldn't stop himself from pushing through the crowd. "Look at me, Charlotte! You and I were meant to be together! The one you should love is me!"
But Sean's small voice was quickly drowned out by the screams and cheers of the crowd. He watched helplessly as Charlotte and Tristan walked away, hand in hand.
"No!" A guttural cry tore from his throat. He stumbled out of the crowd, found his way to the old dog hole that he vaguely remembered from his memory, and crawled through it without hesitation.
