When Sean regained consciousness, his eyes widened in disbelief.
Charlotte was actually standing by the window. The soft morning light streamed through the glass, tracing the sharp lines of her profile in a soft glow.
"Charlotte?" Sean's voice faltered, fragile with disbelief. He was afraid that this was nothing but a mere dream.
Charlotte finally turned around and nodded calmly toward him. "Kylie escaped while on medical parole. She's been caught now, and will likely stay there for a long time with her added charges. So, you don't have to worry about your safety for the time being.
"You suffered a comminuted fracture in your knee. I called in Dr. Hughes to perform the surgery. It went well, but you'll need a long period of recovery."
Alain Hughes was the same orthopedic specialist Sean had once found for Charlotte.
Sean's eyes lit up. He wondered if she'd gone through all these trouble for him because she couldn't let him go just yet.
Before he could reply, Tristan's voice came from the doorway. "You're one lucky guy. We just happened to come back to grab something we forgot, or you'd be dead otherwise. As for staying here with you, it's just to return what's yours. Lottie hates owing anyone anything."
He then pulled out a bank card from his pocket. "Here's the 500 thousand dollars you once gave her. We added another 300 thousand. After paying Dr. Hughes' fee, there's still 620 thousand left. It should cover your rehabilitation."
Charlotte nodded in agreement as she gently sat the card on the bedside cabinet. "You found a doctor who could heal my leg and help me get back to the ring. That's already enough to repay the years I spent taking care of you.
"No matter what, we did grow up together. I hope you'll stop drowning in the past and move forward."
Sean instinctively reached out to her hand, trying to catch her fingers like he'd used to. "Can we really never go back, Charlotte? I know I was wrong. I'll definitely change!
"Even though I can't perform surgery anymore, I can still diagnose and practice medicine. I won't stop you from chasing your dreams again. Please, can we try again?"
Sean finally let out everything he'd been wanting to say. He looked at Charlotte earnestly, his breath caught in his throat in anticipation.
"We can't." Her expression remained unchanged. She simply lifted her right hand.
The couple rings they once shared were long gone. In its place was a wedding band, with a small heart-shaped diamond set delicately in the middle.
Beside Charlotte, Tristan eagerly raised his own hand, proudly showing off a matching ring.
"I'm going to marry Tristan soon, Sean. Besides…" Her hand drifted toward her abdomen as a soft glow of tenderness spread across her face.
Sean froze. It was impossible for him not to understand what she meant by that. There was where their child should've been. Once, they had indeed had a child.
"I'm sorry." Pain and regret filled Sean's gaze as he covered his face with trembling hands, tears slipping helplessly through his fingers.
