Kate's words echoed in Sylvia's mind.
What did she want? Tell her straight?
Sylvia couldn't help but laugh. Not at Kate's arrogance, but because those words were exactly what Connor had said back then, word for word!
Could a person's viciousness really be inherited so perfectly? What a tragedy for humanity.
"What are you laughing at?" Kate was irritated. "Just tell me."
She felt anxious. It was getting dark, and if she wasn't at the hospital when Sawyer returned, she feared he would worry.
"What do I want?" Sylvia fixed her gaze on Kate and patiently asked, "What do you think I want?"
Kate looked at Sylvia, her gaze conveying that she had expected this.
She didn't really want to look down on these mediocre people, but their presence just reeked of cheapness.
What could people from a remote town want? Nothing but fame and fortune.
"I'll give you some money and find you a place to live, but that'll be the end of it. How about that?" Kate offered.
She had some money now.
The engagement gift Sawyer had given her before their engagement was more than enough to put someone like Sylvia in her place.
A flicker of madness crossed Sylvia's eyes. "You think money is what I need?"
Kate's gaze was dripping with disdain. "If not, what then? Don't tell me that you don't care about money. You worked so hard to get into Draventh University. Wasn't it for wealth and status? I can hand it to you now and save you the trouble.
"Ms. Burton, you don't need to play both sides. You're bringing up old matters after all these years. Isn't it just money you want? Or are you after something more?"
Her words labeled Sylvia as greedy.
"You love him that much?" Sylvia's voice softened unexpectedly.
Kate didn't answer directly. "What does that have to do with you?"
"And does he love you? How much does he love you?" A subtle change flickered in Sylvia's eyes.
She remembered the moment she had spoken out at the engagement party. Sawyer hadn't flinched in surprise. All she saw in his eyes was deep, restrained concern for her.
She couldn't help but suspect that Sawyer had orchestrated everything—from meeting Kate to their engagement.
Sylvia couldn't bear it. She couldn't bear for Sawyer to ruin his life and his reputation because of her.
Yes, reputation.
Because being involved with someone like Kate, even superficially, would be an insult to Sawyer.
