I Quit Being a Stepmother (Cypress Gem) novel Chapter 577

Before going to sleep, Sawyer had told the maids that he wouldn't be going into the office that day.

Since he was taking the day off, Kate assumed that he would accompany her on a shopping trip.

"Honey? It's time to wake up. It's already 8:30 am," Kate said softly as she sat on the edge of the bed.

Sawyer stirred, frowning.

Kate nudged his arm. "Honey?"

Suddenly, she let out a startled cry.

With her call, Sawyer opened his eyes, looking somewhat dazed. "Why are you here?"

He had pushed Kate to the floor. Her expression instantly fell, full of grievance. "Honey, why did you push me?"

"I'm not used to people touching me suddenly. My guard is high when I sleep," Sawyer said as he sat up.

Kate wasn't hurt. She had just fallen and landed on the floor.

Sawyer got up to shower and change.

When he emerged, he walked toward the bedroom while talking on the phone. He didn't even notice that Kate was still sitting on the floor.

By the time Sawyer finished his call, Lola approached him.

"What is it?"

"Mr. Burton, Mrs. Burton…" Lola sighed. "She's crying."

Crying?

Sawyer was surprised this time. In his mind, Kate's core nature was inherently cruel. So, what could possibly make her shed tears so easily?

When he followed Lola to find Kate, Sawyer realized that she had led him to his bedroom door.

He was surprised to learn that Kate was there.

No. More precisely, he didn't know why she was still here.

As Sawyer entered the room, the scene before him was exactly as he had expected. He suppressed the disbelief and disgust in his eyes.

Not only was Kate still in his bedroom, but she was also sitting on the floor.

He glanced at his watch. From the moment he got up, showered, and spoke with the research team, an hour and ten minutes had passed.

Kate looked up and said, "Help me up."

Sawyer stood with one hand in his pocket as he looked down at Kate. "You've been sitting here all this time, even shedding tears, just because I didn't help you up? You stayed here the whole time just for that?"

People shouldn't be too spoiled, indeed.

His words struck at Kate's pride. Her desire to act coy vanished immediately.

As she was about to stand, the butler said, "Mr. Burton, Mr. Pearson has arrived."

Kate's eyes widened. "My dad is here?"

"I invited him," Sawyer said as he stepped aside. "You're not going to stay here crying, are you?"

Kate's heart sank.

At that moment, Sawyer felt utterly unfamiliar to her.

She didn't know what was going on. Wasn't she the woman he loved the most? Did he feel nothing while she sat here for over an hour?

Wasn't he supposed to scoop her up from the floor, shower her with affection, and spoil her lavishly?
