Kate told the maid to start preparing lunch. She wanted to finish eating early and get Connor to leave as soon as possible before he said anything that might hurt her relationship with Sawyer.
When the tea was served, Connor sighed.
Sawyer looked at him. "What's wrong, Connor?"
Connor looked at him. "What else could it be? That madwoman just won't leave me alone. I ran into her right outside the college. And the worst part is that she moved into the apartment right across from mine!"
Now Sylvia could practically see exactly when he left home and when he came back, and she wasn't even trying to hide it.
Even if Connor called the police, there wasn't much they could do. They couldn't possibly ask her to move out. Moreover, she hadn't harassed anyone.
Sawyer's expression remained calm as he quietly listened.
The more Connor talked, the angrier he became. "The other night, an old friend of mine had a birthday party. Many people from Draventh showed up—Liam and Ruby, Steven, the Valencia family, the Bauer family, and even the Godwins. And guess who else was there? Sylvia! I saw Ruby laugh. I swear, she was laughing at me."
Connor didn't mention his past grudges with the Ravelle family. However, his pride had never known limits. Deep down, he hoped that one day he and Kate would get a chance to rise again and finally slap those people in the face.
But now, thanks to Sylvia, the Pearsons were practically a public joke.
Kate frowned. "Are you sure that was what you saw?"
Kate didn't think he was wrong. "She's just money-obsessed. That's what drove her mad. You shouldn't waste your anger on someone like that."
Even though she knew what Connor had done back then, she still had to take his side.
As the two of them ranted, Sawyer leaned back in his chair, listening, his smile faint. But if one looked closely, the veins on the back of his hand that was resting on the armrest, were bulging.
When lunch was served, Kate ladled soup into Sawyer's bowl. "Honey, have you thought about it? You have to help Dad. I don't have a mother anymore, and you don't have parents either. Dad's our only family left. We should help him."
Connor threw his weight around. "Sawyer, you're not just a son-in-law to me. You're like my own son. All I want is for you and Kate to be happy. But that won't happen if someone keeps trying to stir up trouble for us. That madwoman won't leave me alone. As my daughter, Kate worries about me. When she's upset, you're upset too, right?"
