Kate said, "Dad, don't worry. Sawyer loves me and treats me so well. He won't just stand by and watch me get upset. He'll help you."
Connor believed that, too.
He hadn't mentioned it before, but now that he was asking in person, as both Sawyer's father-in-law and mentor. How could Sawyer possibly say no?
If Sawyer did nothing, he would appear ungrateful!
Sawyer suddenly smiled.
Just as Connor and Kate thought that he was about to agree, Sawyer turned to her and said, "You're right. I did overlook this. I didn't think it would trouble Connor that much. After all, I've seen you spending time shopping for jewelry and going to fancy lunches with your friends lately. I assumed that everything had already been resolved."
Upon hearing that, Connor immediately turned to Kate. His expression was full of reproach and displeasure.
He couldn't believe that he had been losing sleep every night and living in constant frustration because of that madwoman, while Kate was out dining and shopping like nothing was wrong.
He had thought that Kate had been trying to persuade Sawyer to help him. It seemed that this was her idea of helping.
Sawyer calmly added, "Kate never mentioned it. I apologize, Connor. I didn't realize the situation was still ongoing."
"I…" Kate scrambled to explain, "I was just—"
"Don't you start!"
Connor's voice thundered through the room. "Don't try that smooth-talking act you use on outsiders with me! You're always twisting words and avoiding the point! You'll say anything to make yourself look innocent, won't you? I'm your father! Your only parent! And you don't care about me at all? How selfish can you be?"
If she really cared, she would have talked to Sawyer every day until he helped.
"If the Ravelles heard about this, they'd die laughing! A while ago, Ruby wasn't feeling well, and George sent a helicopter in the middle of the night to fly in top medical experts to the Ravelle residence!
"And when Rhea's third uncle got caught in a hospital scandal, George personally handled it. Those troublemakers disappeared the next day like they never existed! That's what it means to help! That's what a real family does!"
Frowning, Kate crossed her arms. "Sawyer, what are you trying to do?"
She was questioning him for the first time.
Sawyer looked up, puzzled. "What do you mean?"
"My dad just stormed out, and you didn't even stop him. You should've promised him to help him take care of Sylvia. He's my dad. As his family, it's our duty to support and protect him." Kate was clearly angry now.
She felt that Sawyer wasn't putting enough effort into this. She thought that if he truly cared about her, he should have stepped in and dealt with Sylvia.
"I think it's better if I stay out of it," Sawyer said, setting down his cutlery and wiping his mouth with a napkin.
Kate frowned. "Why?"
"Because the case is still open. What if the accusations turn out to be true? Once it's made public, people will say that we're covering for Connor. How are we supposed to keep our footing in Draventh after that?" Sawyer replied.
