I Quit Being a Stepmother (Cypress Gem) novel Chapter 585

That one single text from Sawyer was enough to settle Kate's unease. The corners of her lips couldn't help but lift into a smile.

She knew that he wouldn't ignore her.

"Why are you smiling like that? What are you thinking about?"

By the elevator, colleagues were gathering to leave.

"Ms. Ravelle."

"Ms. Ravelle."

They politely let Rhea go first.

Rhea, holding her phone in one hand and her bag in the other, shook her head. "I'm not in a rush. You guys can go ahead."

Lauren and Carter were 15 feet apart as they made their way to the elevator doors.

The two elevators were moving slowly since people on the other floors were all leaving.

Rhea's appearance caused the chatter among the colleagues to die down.

Rhea replied to a WhatsApp message with a voice note. "The clothes I ordered have arrived at my parents' place. Can you help me bring them? I'm waiting for the elevator now."

Clearly, she was talking to George.

Kate, standing by the left elevator, replied to Gisselle's earlier question, "Nothing much. I was just thinking about some funny things that happened with my husband."

"Oh, that's the smile of someone in a happy marriage, huh?" Gisselle teased.

Lauren paused and gave Kate a cold glance.

She had figured it out—Kate was the ultimate show-off.

"The kids really liked the things you got them. I wanted to thank you on their behalf," Carter suddenly said.

Frowning, Lauren turned and stepped aside, her expression full of disgust.

Well, it looked like a spectacle was about to unfold.

She sarcastically said, "Oh, maybe I'm just near-sighted. I don't see Mr. Burton's car. Is traffic that bad?"

When Kate noticed that Sawyer's car wasn't at the company entrance, a flash of anger and a touch of embarrassment flared up inside her.

Hearing Lauren's question now, she didn't bother thinking about their relationship and immediately went along. "Yeah, the traffic's quite bad. You guys can leave first."

"I can stay with you until Mr. Burton gets here," Gisselle offered.

Kate quickly shook her head. "It's fine. He'll be here soon. Go on. I'll see you tomorrow!"

After sending her colleagues off, she breathed a sigh of relief. She quickly unlocked her phone to check Sawyer's message.

Seeing the message, Kate felt her vision darken. She was practically trembling with anger.

On the screen was Sawyer's short reply. "No time. Find your own way home."
