When Kate got home from work, she didn't eat, change, or even remove her makeup. She sat on the living room couch, waiting for Sawyer to return.
The maids could tell that she was in a bad mood, and none of them dared approach. They quietly went about their own tasks instead.
It wasn't until around 11:00 pm that Sawyer finally returned home. He didn't even glance toward the living room.
Kate hadn't turned on the lights. She watched him quietly as he changed his shoes and poured himself a glass of water.
After a long moment, she couldn't hold it in any longer. "Sawyer, we just got married, and you've already changed into someone else."
Only then did Sawyer notice that she was there.
Standing in the dark, he met her gaze calmly. "What are you talking about?"
Kate said, "We had a conflict, and instead of trying to resolve it, you just left me hanging and went out to have fun with your friend. Is that what a husband does?"
Sawyer set down his glass. His voice was hoarse from the drinks he had had earlier. "There's never been a conflict between us."
"How can there be no conflict? You—"
"I simply disagreed to help your dad with that issue. That's not a conflict. I just didn't want to be forced. Sure, it caused some tension, and I was willing to fix it, but you immediately brought up divorce."
Kate froze for a moment, then said, "But you didn't contact me."
"Why would I?" Sawyer loosened his tie and lit a cigarette in front of her.
Kate frowned. "I told you, no smoking outside the study."
Sawyer exhaled smoke. "Do you need me to remind you? This is my home."
His home?
