Kate took a long moment to calm herself. She racked her brain, trying to figure out how things had come to this.
However, nothing felt devastating enough to explain Sawyer's change in behavior.
If she had been unfortunate enough to meet a man who was two-faced and self-serving, she could understand. But Sawyer wasn't that type.
After all, the Pearson family had already fallen. There was no reason for him to use them and act like this. It simply wasn't worth it.
When she finally started to shake off the shock and unease, a thought struck her. She could call Connor and let him know about Sawyer's change to prevent any potential disaster.
She hadn't considered asking for help before because she genuinely loved Sawyer.
He had given her everything she had once admired and yearned for in George, surrounding her with love for the first time since Evie's passing.
That warmth made her reluctant to let go.
So she told herself that as long as they talked things through, this trivial issue could be resolved.
But as she thought about everything that had happened that day, regret gnawed at her.
If she had known that it would turn out like this, she wouldn't have cared what Rhea and the others thought.
If only she hadn't insisted that Sawyer help Connor clean up that mess, she wouldn't be stuck like this.
"Make some chicken soup. Fast," Kate told a maid.
The maid replied, "Mrs. Burton, even if we rush it, it'll take two to three hours."
"Finish it within an hour," Kate ordered. "Just get more people to help."
The other ladies of privilege they had served would engage in meaningful pursuits to better themselves, refine their character, and live up to their positions, even when they didn't work.
But since marrying Sawyer, Kate had done nothing but bring home shopping bags—mountains of them—feast on expensive ingredients in elaborate meals, and occasionally skip work or leave early. Not even once had she done any exercise.
What did Sawyer even see in her?
"Let's just do our job," Lydia muttered.
"I can't take it anymore," said Taryn. "I may be working for them, but I still want to do it in peace. She's obviously taking her frustrations out on us. Who does she think she is? Even my daughter-in-law wouldn't do this to me.
"Mr. Burton treats her so well, yet she throws around talk of divorce just because of her father's disgraceful behavior. She's way too spoiled. She really thinks Mr. Burton is going to bend to her every whim. Seeing him finally lose his temper tonight was so satisfying!"
The more Taryn thought about it, the more satisfied she felt.
