Liora went out to bring Zayne in. When they came back together, she made the introductions. "This is Mr. Sawyer Burton, Kate's husband. This is my husband, Zayne Marsh."
Sawyer and Zayne shook hands. They'd seen each other at Sawyer and Kate's wedding.
After Zayne took his seat beside Sawyer, the meal started.
Zayne looked cool and composed on the surface. He seemed to handle the situation with ease. But deep down, he felt unsettled. Sawyer's presence was almost exactly like George's!
He didn't shout or glare, but it was precisely that calmness with which he conducted himself that made one's hair stand on end.
Liora texted him. "Hold your head high and keep it together!"
"Oh, my. Mrs. Burton, what happened to your knees?" A woman noticed Kate's injured knees when she looked down.
Kate's dress didn't reach her ankles, so her knees were vaguely in view when her dress rode up slightly after she'd taken her seat.
She said, "I injured them when scrubbing the floor on my knees. I—"
"They're from scrubbing the floor?" Evelyn bluntly remarked. "Didn't you tell us they were from doing yoga?"
Indeed, she had. She'd said it just a few hours ago! Was she changing her story already?
Kate had evidently forgotten her lie. She wanted to explain, but Sawyer beat her to it. He said, "They're indeed from scrubbing the floor. She only lied about them being from yoga because she didn't want anyone to worry."
She was surprised that he was speaking up for her. She pursed her lips, wondering whether this meant that he was done torturing her. Had he finally realized that he'd gone too far?
She grew agitated, and her eyes reddened as she looked at him. "Honestly, why are you saying this? You'll make my friends worry."
"Why did you have to kneel on the floor while scrubbing the tiles? Even if you think that no one else can get them as clean as you can, you could've done it on your feet."
"Exactly. It must've hurt like hell. Your knees are going to scar."
Kate started, "I was—"
