I Refuse to Be Your Second Choice novel Chapter 108

The doctor arrived shortly after and set up a new IV for Natalie.

Seeing the lights in the bedroom go out, Alexander finally instructed Aaron Lee to drive away.

When he returned to the villa, Charlotte saw that he was alone. “Where’s Natalie?”

“She’s still at the hospital. She needs to stay for a couple of days.”

Claiming he had work to do, Alexander told Charlotte to get some rest and then disappeared into the study in his bedroom.

Charlotte stared at his retreating back for a long while before turning to Susan. “Doesn't he look just like a man who's been abandoned by his wife?”

The next day, Natalie felt much better. She sent a text to Alexander: [I won’t be coming back to the villa for a few days. Please explain it to Grandma.]

Thirty seconds later, he replied: [Whenever you want to come back, I’ll come and get you.]

Natalie put her phone down after reading the message and went into the bathroom.

Downstairs, Alexander waited for a long time, but no further reply came. Eventually, he saw her and Arianna Mitchell emerge from the apartment building’s entrance. She was wearing a cream-colored suit, her hair tied back in a low ponytail. Her makeup was a little heavier than usual, subtly concealing her lingering weariness.

She got into Arianna’s white Audi, which then drove away.

Aaron Lee glanced at Alexander in the rearview mirror. He was about to ask if they should follow but then checked himself. As a competent executive assistant, wasn't it his job to anticipate his boss's wishes?

So, shortly after the Audi pulled away, he started the car and followed it. As expected, Alexander said nothing.

They followed the car all the way to Pinnacle Place. Arianna pulled over, and Natalie got out of the passenger seat, gave a small wave to the car, and then walked into the building.

“To the office,” Alexander said.

After a busy morning, Ava Thompson knocked on Natalie’s door to ask what she wanted for lunch.

Although her fever was gone, Natalie’s appetite hadn't fully returned. She wasn’t in the mood for anything too bland; a tangy and slightly spicy dish was the only thing that sounded appealing.

“Ava, could you get me…”

She had barely started when her secretary knocked, holding a thermal food container.

“Nora, this was just delivered from downstairs. They said it was specially made by your family.”

Natalie was surprised. She opened the container, and a fragrant, tangy aroma wafted out, instantly whetting her appetite. Inside was a dish just like she had been craving, both sour and spicy.

With her lunch sorted, she told Ava and the secretary to go get their own meals.

She rang the doorbell, and the door opened almost instantly. But the person who opened it wasn’t Arianna; it was a stranger, a woman dressed in what looked like a housekeeper’s uniform.

“Mrs. Ramirez,” the woman said with a polite smile and a bow.

Natalie froze, not recognizing her at all. “Who are you?”

“Natalie, you’re back!” Arianna, already in her loungewear, came running out of the bedroom. She pulled Natalie inside, and the housekeeper nodded at them before resuming her dusting.

“Is she your new part-time cleaner?” Natalie asked.

Arianna glanced toward the living room and whispered, “Not mine. She was sent by Alexander Ramirez. They were waiting at my door when I got home from work.”

“They?” Natalie was shocked. There was more than one?

Arianna led her to the kitchen doorway, where two men in chef’s hats were busy at work in the somewhat cramped space.

“He sent them too. They marched straight into my kitchen the moment they arrived. I was planning on showing off my rare culinary skills for you tonight, but I guess I don’t have to now.”

Natalie took in the scene. “Arianna, I need to make a phone call.”
