It was a weekday, in the middle of the day, and Alexander was home. Knocking on her door to ask if she was hungry.
Natalie thought he was being ridiculous.
"Not hungry," she replied coldly, moving to shut the door.
Alexander blocked it with his hand. Natalie looked up at him.
"I'm hungry," he said, a slight curve to his lips.
"What does your hunger have to do with me?"
She tried to close the door again, but he held it firm, even stepping one foot inside. "I've developed hypoglycemia. I can't go hungry, or I'll get dizzy and faint. Aaron Lee is busy at the office, The Apex Residences is too far, and The Ramirez Estate is even farther. You're the only one I can turn to."
"Hypoglycemia?" Natalie scoffed, looking at him with disbelief.
"You don't believe me? Fine. You can take me to the hospital when I collapse in a few minutes."
Alexander dropped his hand, giving her an opening.
"Then I'll wait for you to collapse," she said, slamming the door shut.
She turned and took a few steps away, then pulled up the security feed on her phone. Alexander hadn't left. He was leaning against the opposite wall, arms crossed, and as if sensing her gaze, he offered a small smile.
Annoyed, Natalie closed the video feed.
Whether he was telling the truth or not, it had nothing to do with her.
She repeated this to herself as she returned to the sofa and tried to focus on the files on her tablet. Her eyes scanned every word, but nothing registered. She had to start over.
After several failed attempts, Natalie tossed the tablet onto the sofa in frustration and marched back to the door.
She paused for a moment before pulling it open.
Alexander was still leaning against the wall, looking perfectly relaxed.
"I don't have time to cook for you. The best I can do is order takeout," Natalie said, turning back inside without closing the door.
Alexander followed her in. "You know how picky I am. I can't stand the taste of most delivery food. If it's not good, I won't eat it, and I'll still end up fainting."
Natalie was speechless for a moment before asking, "What do you want to eat?"
Behaving as if he were in his own home, Alexander walked to the sofa, sat where she had been sitting, and casually grabbed a throw pillow. With a smile in his eyes, he said, "I'll eat anything you make."
Natalie took a deep, steadying breath. Just one more week until the divorce was final. Then, she would be completely free of him. If he tried any more stunts after that, she'd throw him out herself.
Alexander insisted. Spotting a hair clip on the island behind her, he picked it up and fastened her hair in place.
"There," he murmured.
Natalie kept her back to him and simply nodded, resuming her work.
Soon, she had prepared three dishes and set them on the dining table.
"It's ready," she said to Alexander.
He had been looking through the auction files on her tablet. Hearing her voice, he walked over.
His eyes fell on the dishes—all his favorites. They smelled almost exactly as she used to make them.
Without a word, Alexander sat down and began to eat, one bite after another, as if he had truly been starving.
"There's soup, too," Natalie said, turning to get it.
After a satisfying meal, Alexander finally felt content and spoke up.
"Aren't you worried something will go wrong, taking on this auction for Prestige Properties Group?"
