“We’ll talk after we’re discharged,” he murmured against her lips, his voice husky. “But some things can be done before.”
As he moved to press down on her, Natalie quickly placed her right hand between them. “Are you trying to get yourself killed?” she said urgently.
He wasn’t fully recovered, and he was already thinking about that.
Alexander’s lips curved into a wicked grin. “Dying on top of you would be worth it.”
With his upturned eyes and handsome face, still pale from his injury, he exuded a dangerous charm.
His hand began to roam over her body, slowly slipping under the hem of her shirt.
A shiver ran through Natalie, and a soft moan escaped her lips.
Alexander, pleased with her reaction, lowered his head to kiss her ear.
“No…” Just as she felt herself succumbing, Natalie forced herself back to reality. She covered his lips with her hand. “You can’t. What if you aggravate your injury? Please, go back to your room. Your family will be here soon. You should go.”
During Alexander’s hospital stay, his family had assigned a host of servants to attend to him, and Savannah Davis visited frequently. But Alexander disliked the fuss, so he had restricted their visits to a half-hour window in the evenings.
Her tone was earnest, her eyes pleading.
Alexander suppressed his desire and kissed her palm. “Consider it a debt. You owe me.”
He whispered in her ear, “And I’ll be collecting double next time.”
The implication made Natalie’s ears burn.
Alexander chuckled, his voice a low rumble. He got out of bed and tucked the blanket around her. “I’ve asked Susan to make your favorite dishes. They’ll be sent over soon.”
Natalie didn’t look at him, just mumbled an “Mhm.”
“You should go now,” she urged.
Alexander didn’t linger. A moment later, the door opened and closed.
Natalie let out a long breath and touched her face. It was scorching hot. But as she replayed the last few minutes in her head, she couldn’t stop a smile from spreading across her lips.
Fine, she thought. I’ll say yes.
“Hey, what are you thinking about, smiling like that?”
Suddenly, Arianna Mitchell’s face appeared right in front of hers, startling her.
“You’re so quiet! I didn’t even hear you come in,” Natalie said, placing a hand over her racing heart.
Arianna set the fruit she had brought on the side table and started peeling an orange. “You were just too lost in thought to notice. So, what was it? What good news has you so happy?” She expertly peeled the orange and offered a slice to Natalie.
Zoe smiled. “Isn’t it a good thing that Alexander and Natalie are back together? I think you’re quite happy about it.”
At the thought of her accomplished daughter-in-law, Savannah couldn’t suppress the smile tugging at her lips.
Back in the room, Alexander picked up his phone, ready to call Natalie.
A knock sounded at the door.
Aaron Lee entered swiftly.
Before he could speak, Alexander said, “Go to my office and get the meteorite slice from my desk.”
Aaron was surprised. Alexander had acquired that meteorite slice at an auction three years ago and had kept it locked in his desk drawer ever since.
“Mr. Ramirez, are you finally planning to give it to Mrs. Ramirez?”
Caught, Alexander feigned annoyance. “You talk too much. Now, what did you find?”
That was why Aaron was here—to report on the investigation he’d been tasked with.
Aaron chuckled, then his expression turned serious as he relayed his findings to Alexander.
