Alexander’s frown deepened. “That’s absurd.”

He and Camila White had never shared a single romantic moment, let alone an intimate one. How could she possibly be pregnant with his child?

“She said it happened at Sagebrush Community. The night you were drunk.”

His mother’s words made him freeze.

He had only been that drunk at Sagebrush once. It was the night he’d overheard a tipsy Natalie telling Arianna Mitchell that she wished he would just let her go.

He had made his decision then, but the emotional turmoil had been too much. He had locked himself away at the property and drank himself into a stupor. When he’d regained some awareness, he remembered seeing Natalie standing in the doorway of their master bedroom. But he also remembered that Camila White had been there with him.

Alexander had immediately driven back to the Ramirez Estate.

Camila was sitting in the living room, looking grief-stricken. His parents and grandmother were all there.

Alexander walked straight up to her, his voice like ice. “I would never have done something like that with you. And have you forgotten? You told me yourself that nothing happened that night.”

To suddenly claim she was pregnant now… Alexander was deeply suspicious of her motives. “Are you so desperate to marry into the Ramirez family that you’d ruin your own reputation with a lie like this?”

Camila shook her head, tears streaming down her face as she sobbed. She picked up a medical report from the table and held it out to him.

“I’m not lying. I’m really pregnant. It’s been just over a month. The timing matches that night perfectly.”

Alexander stared at the paper in his hand. It clearly stated: early pregnancy, four weeks.

Camila continued to weep. “I came to deliver some documents, but I found you drunk. I tried to help you to the bedroom, but you mistook me for Natalie Watson. I couldn’t fight you off, so…”

“Later, I said nothing happened because I was devastated, feeling like I was just a substitute for her. I never imagined I would get pregnant from that one time.”

“I know you only see me as a childhood friend, so when I found out, I was going to terminate the pregnancy. I didn’t want to be a burden to you. But the doctor said my uterine lining is thin. If I don’t keep this baby, I might have trouble conceiving again in the future.”

By the time she finished, Camila was a sobbing, pitiful mess.

Alexander clenched the report, trying desperately to recall the events of that night. He had been trying ever since the drive over, but his memory was a complete blank.

He had drunk far too much. All he remembered was what happened afterward. And… he remembered waking up shirtless, wearing only a pair of sleep pants.

Then she turned to her grandson. “Alexander,” she said, her eyes filled with a sad wisdom. “You cannot hurt Natalie any more than you already have. You cannot ask her to accept this. Go and get the divorce.”

Alexander spent the rest of the day locked in his room. He stared at the messages from Natalie, unable to bring himself to reply. When her calls came through, he could only watch the screen light up, then go dark again.

Finally, just now, when she called again, an exhausted Alexander had picked up.

Her voice was a sweet torture.

And in return, he had to speak words of unimaginable cruelty.

He was grateful she hadn’t pressed for a reason, grateful she had maintained her resolve to divorce him. It made the guilt a little easier to bear.

Alexander picked up his phone again and called Aaron Lee. “Arrange for Camila White to have a check-up at The Ramirez Hospital tomorrow.”
