Bruce knew exactly what the question meant.
“My people checked everywhere—official records, the black market, you name it. There’s nothing. No sign Camila White ever bought any kind of drug.”
The death of Camila’s ex-husband still lingered over everyone like a bad cloud. They’d found a strange substance in his blood. For the last two years of his life, Camila had been the only one taking care of him. Nobody else got close. If he’d been poisoned, it almost had to be her. That would mean she’d needed to buy poison somewhere. The Ward family had connections everywhere, legal and otherwise. If there was a trail, they would have found it.
Alexander listened, saying nothing, just thinking it all over.
Bruce hesitated, then added, “Maybe it really wasn’t her. Maybe her ex-husband... I don’t know, maybe he couldn’t take it anymore. Maybe he took something himself, or ate something by accident that ended up killing him.”
“If it was suicide or some kind of accident, the hospital would have found the cause,” Alexander said quietly. “Keep going. I want to know everything she did before he died. Every last detail.”
“Alright,” Bruce nodded. “I’ll get my people to look again.”
Alexander barely nodded, then stood up, ready to leave. He was almost at the door when Bruce called after him.
“I saw Natalie Watson today. She had fingerprints on her face.”
He’d noticed it right away at the mall—the faint marks on her cheek, like she’d been slapped. With how angry Arianna Mitchell had been, Bruce was sure someone from the Ramirez family was involved. Whether it was Savannah or Camila, he couldn’t say.
Alexander’s eyebrows drew together, his whole face turning cold. He didn’t say a word. He just walked out.
At the Ramirez estate, Savannah was making ginseng tea for her husband, Gabriel. When she saw her son come in, she immediately told the staff to get him a late-night snack.
“You must be tired. Should I have someone run a bath for you?”
Her son didn’t visit often, so Savannah was fussing over him, wanting everything just right.
“You left the house early today. Was something going on?” Alexander asked, not answering her, just asking his own question.
“I went to have tea with some friends, that’s all...” Savannah answered without thinking. Then she paused, realizing there was no way Alexander should have known she’d gone out so early. “How did you know that?”
Savannah froze, completely thrown. Even Gabriel looked shocked.
“What did you just say?” Savannah stared at him, like she couldn’t believe it. “You’re about to get married. You’re going to be a father. How could you…”
Gabriel lost it. “Unbelievable! You and Natalie are divorced. How could you do this to Camila? If you couldn’t move on from Natalie, why did you get involved with the White family’s daughter? Now there’s a baby on the way. Why can’t you just settle down? How did I end up with a son like this?”
He was furious. The Ramirez family had always been strict about their reputation. Nobody had ever brought shame to the family name—until now.
The shouting brought Charlotte out of her room, even though she’d already gone to bed. “What’s all the noise?”
Alexander stood there, his expression dark and unreadable. After a long moment, his voice cut through the tension.
“From now on, none of you are to go near Natalie Watson unless I say so. As for me and Camila, I’ll give you all an answer in a month.”
