Natalie heard Alexander’s voice drift from the other room. He was on the phone with Camila White. Without hesitating, Natalie turned around and walked away.
Alexander glanced toward the doorway and caught a glimpse of someone in a white robe slipping out of sight. He focused back on the phone. Camila’s voice was trembling, almost on the edge of tears.
“Alex, I just heard you’re back in the country. I wanted to come pick you up. My stomach really hurts, too. You’re the baby’s father, don’t you care about me at all?”
“We’ll know soon enough whether I’m the father.” Alexander’s tone was flat. He ended the call right after.
On the other end, Camila stared at her phone in disbelief as the call dropped. Then she threw it onto the bed, fuming. Did he really think she didn’t know where he was? If she hadn’t bribed that junior assistant of his, she’d never have learned he was back in Cabinda.
The assistant told her Alexander left in a rush, like something urgent had happened. He didn’t even finish his meetings, just hopped on his private jet and left. The Ramirez family was fine, the business was running as usual. The only thing that could make Alexander abandon such a huge deal and rush back home was Natalie Watson.
Camila’s face twisted with jealousy. When Charlotte Roberts suggested getting engaged, Alexander used the merger as an excuse to push things back. But the second he heard Natalie was in trouble, he dropped everything and flew across the world for her.
“Don’t blame me for using Benjamin to ruin you, Natalie,” Camila muttered to herself, her voice cold and sharp. “It’s your own fault for being the only one Alexander cares about.”
Since Benjamin woke up in the hospital, Camila had been planting seeds in his mind, making sure he understood that if he couldn’t go after Alexander, Natalie was still fair game. After all, they were divorced. Natalie didn’t mean anything to Alexander anymore.
Benjamin was hesitant at first, but Camila kept pushing. She reminded him that he wasn’t a “real man” anymore. Was he just going to sit in that wheelchair for the rest of his life? She fed him lies about Natalie, said she looked down on him, even told people he got what he deserved.
Eventually, Benjamin’s anger flared up, just as Camila wanted. She didn’t expect him to actually succeed, but she was happy to use this chaos to get Alexander to deal with her brother for her. Her father refused to give her The Watson Group, even went back on his word. If he wanted to play dirty, she would too.
Natalie looked down at his hand on her arm. “This isn’t my home anymore.”
“It is.” His eyes locked on hers, dark and deep, unreadable.
“If that’s what you want to think, I can’t stop you,” Natalie said, lifting her head. Her voice was soft, tired. “But I need to go back to my own place.”
He could insist all he wanted, but Natalie knew the truth. This wasn’t her home any longer. Even if no other woman had ever stayed here, she didn’t belong.
She started to pull her arm free, but suddenly Alexander pulled her into his arms, holding her tightly. “I told you,” he whispered, his voice shaking just a little, “don’t judge me before you know the truth. I’m not asking you to stay here forever. I just... I don’t want you to leave tonight. When I thought you were gone, you have no idea how scared I was.”
