It was the first time Samuel Thompson had ever been turned down by a woman.
Honestly, he wasn’t all that upset. It just felt like a missed opportunity for Arianna Mitchell, and he thought it would’ve suited her perfectly.
He sent back, “No worries. There’ll be other chances.”
Arianna replied, “Thank you, Mr. Thompson.”
Samuel responded with a simple, “Sure.”
He slipped his phone away as the auction kicked off.
Natalie Watson sat watching the livestream on her tablet. At first, Ava Thompson looked nervous, not quite in the groove. But she caught herself, took a deep breath, and found her rhythm. By the time the first lot was sold, Ava was already in her element.
Everything up for auction today was rare and valuable, and the starting bids were no joke. Once Natalie saw Ava had things under control, she stopped watching the feed.
Her phone rang. She checked the time. The auction was over. Ava was calling.
“Nora, I’m sorry. Two items didn’t sell,” Ava said, her voice small and a little shaky.
Natalie smiled, trying to reassure her. “You did really well. Most new auctioneers have at least three lots that don’t sell their first time. You handled it beautifully.”
Ava’s whole mood lifted, her eyes lighting up at the praise.
Suddenly, Natalie caught some background noise on the call. It sounded like a bunch of reporters.
“Mr. Ramirez, your engagement to Ms. White is almost here. Any hints about surprises at the ceremony?”
Even with all the noise, Natalie heard Alexander Ramirez’s smooth reply.
“You said it’s a surprise. How could I possibly give it away?”
Security was trying to keep the crowd back, and more reporters were shouting questions.
“Nora?” Ava called, snapping Natalie back to the conversation. It sounded like she’d been trying to get her attention.
Inside the car, Camila turned to him. “Where is she?”
Eric shut the driver’s door, ignoring her question. Suddenly, he grabbed the back of her head and kissed her hard, desperate. Camila frowned, pushing him away.
“Are you out of your mind? What if someone sees?”
“No one can see inside.”
He leaned in for another kiss, but Camila blocked him. “I asked you where she is.”
Eric finally got himself under control. “At the old warehouse by the sea.”
“Then drive,” Camila said, impatient.
Half an hour later, the warehouse door creaked open. Camila peered inside and saw a woman lying face down on the floor.
