Ava Thompson knocked on the door and stepped inside.
“Nora, The White Group just sent over an invitation. They’re hosting a banquet tomorrow night and want you to attend.”
As soon as Natalie heard the name, she remembered what Arianna Mitchell had mentioned. Camila White had recently taken over The White Group. This was obviously Camila’s way of building her network, but it was strange she’d invite Natalie. Natalie didn’t believe for a second that Camila saw her as a useful contact. This felt much more like a chance to show off or stir up trouble.
“Call Mr. White. Tell him I’m busy and won’t be able to make it.” Natalie had no desire to watch Camila’s little performance.
“Alright, Nora.” Ava started to leave, but Natalie spoke up again.
“Wait. Forget it. Don’t call.”
If she bailed, Camila would just think she was scared. Sometimes, backing away didn’t solve anything. It only made people like Camila push harder. Maybe this was the perfect chance to make things clear and finally let her know she wasn’t interested in Alexander Ramirez at all.
Ava didn’t know what had changed Natalie’s mind, but she nodded. “Okay.”
“Ava, your training at headquarters starts in a couple of days. You’re not my assistant anymore. You don’t have to run errands like this,” Natalie said, her tone gentle. She’d already requested Ava’s promotion to auctioneer the day after coming back to London.
“I’ve finished handing things over to the new assistant,” Ava replied, her voice a mix of gratitude and a little sadness. “But I wanted to finish what I started.” She’d only been Natalie’s assistant for a year, but their bond was strong.
She stumbled, her balance gone. Just as she was about to hit the floor, a strong arm wrapped around her waist and steadied her.
“Careful,” a low, warm voice said near her ear.
Natalie looked up and found Alexander staring back at her, his eyes intense. The heat of his hand came through the thin fabric of her dress, making her freeze for a heartbeat. She quickly pulled herself together, gently moved his hand away, and stood up straight.
Her voice was cool and distant as she said, “Thank you.”
