Arianna wanted to say more, but when she saw the mix of pleading and determination in Natalie’s eyes, she let it go and sat back down.
Just then, the door opened and Samuel Thompson walked in. He had made sure Natalie was settled, then spoke with her doctor to confirm she wouldn’t suffer any lasting effects, and now he was back. He looked a little surprised to find Arianna there.
“Mr. Thompson,” Arianna greeted him, standing up. She offered a polite smile. “Thank you for taking care of Natalie.”
Samuel shook his head. “You don’t have to thank me. Natalie’s my friend. Of course I’d help.”
He figured Arianna must have called Natalie and that’s how she ended up here. It wasn’t too surprising.
He turned to Natalie. “Don’t worry. As long as you rest, your leg will heal just fine. It’s getting pretty late, so I won’t stay. The nurses here are great. I’ve already let them know to help you with anything you need.”
Natalie had already thanked him so many times, she didn’t know what else to say. Samuel smiled, almost as if he could read her mind. “Seriously, no more thank-yous. Just focus on getting better. That’s what matters.”
Natalie nodded. “I will.”
Samuel got ready to leave. He turned to say goodbye to Arianna, but her phone started ringing. She glanced at the caller ID and said, “Sorry, I need to take this. Mr. Thompson, you’ve done enough. I’ll stay with Natalie. You should get some rest.”
She didn’t wait for a reply, just walked quickly out of the room.
Samuel spoke with Natalie for another moment, then left as well. In the quiet hallway, he spotted Arianna a little ways off, talking on the phone.
“I’m already at the hospital,” Arianna said, her voice clear in the silence. “Thank you for letting me know, Mr. Ward.”
Samuel paused for a second, then headed for the elevator. Arianna had her back to him, so she didn’t see him stop. She only turned around when she heard footsteps, catching a glimpse of his figure disappearing around the corner.
Camila turned her head a little and saw Savannah, with Alexander Ramirez standing quietly nearby.
“Savannah… Alex…” Her voice was rough and weak. “I’m sorry I made you worry.” She managed a small, shaky smile, but her lips were pale. “Is… is the baby alright?”
Savannah’s face tightened, and her eyes filled with sympathy. She squeezed Camila’s hand gently. “Camila, the baby didn’t make it. But please don’t be too sad. You’re young, you’ll have more chances in the future.”
It was like all the color drained from Camila’s face. Tears welled up right away, and her fingers gripped the sheets tight.
“No… that can’t be…”
With disbelief written all over her face, she turned to Alexander. “Alex, our baby’s still here, right?”
