When Alexander told her the truth, Camila’s face went shockingly pale. She clung to his hand, her voice shaking.
“Alex, how could this happen to you? The doctors must have made a mistake. We should go to another hospital and double-check.”
Tears were already filling her eyes, spilling down her cheeks before she could stop them.
“The Ramirez Group has the best heart specialists around. They’re not wrong,” Alexander said, trying to keep his tone calm.
“Then why didn’t you tell me sooner?”
He pulled a tissue from the box and offered it to her. “Don’t worry. The doctor said if I take my medicine and rest, it’ll be manageable. I just didn’t want you to worry, that’s all.”
Camila took the tissue and wiped her tears, her voice breaking. “But it’s your heart, Alex. How can you act like this is nothing? If something happens to you... what am I supposed to do?”
Alexander gazed at her, watching the tears run down her delicate face. He let out a slow sigh, then grabbed another tissue to gently blot her cheeks.
“I’m still standing here, aren’t I?” He hesitated, looking away for a second. “Even if things got really bad, I’ve already written a will. If anything happens to me, everything I own goes to you. You’ll never have to worry.”
Camila went still, stunned. Her tears only fell harder after that.
She shook her head hard. “I don’t want your money, I just want you to be okay.”
She wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face in his chest as she sobbed quietly.
Alexander lowered his gaze, his arms staying at his sides for a long moment. Finally, he lifted one hand and patted her back gently. “Alright. I’ll take care of myself. I promise.”
Outside the Ramirez Group tower, Natalie stepped out of her car.
She had made up her mind to come see Alexander in person. She needed answers about what had happened, and she wanted to hear them straight from him.
She tilted her head back, looking up at the skyscraper as it stretched into the sky, the top floors fading into a soft mist.
“I know, I wouldn’t say a word. It’s just, what a shame. He’s so handsome and successful. If he doesn’t make it, that would be such a waste.”
The women disappeared through the doors, and Natalie couldn’t hear anything else.
She stood frozen, her mind spinning.
It took her a minute to snap out of it. With trembling fingers, she pulled out her phone and tried to dial Bruce Ward’s number.
She struggled to steady her hands, finally managing to make the call.
“Mr. Ward, it’s me.” Her voice came out rough and unsteady. “Is it true? Did Alexander really have a heart attack?”
There was a long silence on the other end before Bruce Ward finally answered, his voice slow and heavy.
