I Refuse to Be Your Second Choice novel Chapter 59

The idea of paying to watch a game of Truth or Dare was unheard of.

And ten million dollars a person? For Samuel Thompson alone, that wasn't an outrageous sum, let alone with Natalie Watson involved. After the auction, everyone knew her name. Her appearance fee would likely be higher than any A-list celebrity's.

But for the others in the room, even those from wealthy families, casually throwing around ten million dollars was out of the question.

They all stared at each other in stunned silence.

“Mr. Thompson, you’re cheating,” Bruce’s date whined. She turned to Bruce. “Does this new rule of his even count?”

“And you think I’m going to be the one to tell him it doesn’t?” Bruce said, crossing his arms. “You’re the one who pushed him into this dare. Now we all have to pay up. You’re covering your own share, by the way.”

Ten million was not a thousand. The color drained from the woman’s face. The others, caught in the crossfire, were furious but didn’t dare say anything, instead glaring daggers at her.

Arianna leaned close to Natalie’s ear. “Mr. Thompson did that on purpose,” she whispered.

Natalie knew. She was relieved that he had been unwilling to go through with it. Otherwise, she had no idea how she would have escaped the situation.

Just then, a knock sounded and a waiter entered the room.

“Ms. Watson, there’s someone downstairs looking for you.”

Natalie was taken aback. Who would be looking for her at a bar?

“Excuse me, I have to step out,” she said to the room, then followed the waiter out.

The waiter, busy with his duties, pointed her in the right direction before hurrying off to another room.

Natalie was still trying to figure out who it could be when, as she passed an empty private room, a strong hand shot out and yanked her inside. The door was slammed shut behind her.

A scream caught in her throat as a fierce kiss silenced her completely.

Her slender body was pinned against the door, an all-too-familiar presence enveloping her. The air was stolen from her lungs as his lips moved against hers with a desperate, almost angry force, showing no concern for whether she could breathe.

It was a kiss filled with rage.

Natalie beat against his chest, her vision blurring as she began to feel faint. Just as her knees were about to buckle, a strong arm wrapped around her waist, holding her steady.

“Are you that desperate for a man? One isn’t enough, you have to go after another?” With Eugene out of the country, she had immediately set her sights on Samuel Thompson.

“Alexander Ramirez!” Natalie cried out, her eyes filled with utter disappointment. How could he say something so vile?

The sound of her voice hung in the heavy silence, punctuated only by the muffled, rhythmic beat of the music from outside. Natalie’s hands, which had been clenched into fists, slowly relaxed.

“I’ll have a new set of divorce papers drawn up for you as soon as possible.”

With that, she turned and reached for the doorknob.

A hand shot out from behind her and slammed the door shut. Alexander’s voice was low and dangerous. “After we’re divorced, what then? Will you run to Eugene? Or will it be Samuel Thompson?”

Natalie spun around, her eyes wide with shock.

“What did you just say?!”

Alexander’s laugh was laced with chilling cruelty. “My guess is you’re betting on Eugene. But even if he broke his engagement to Grace Bennett, it won’t be for you. You can stop dreaming.”
