I Refuse to Be Your Second Choice novel Chapter 80

Staying at The Ramirez Estate meant they would have to share a room.

“Grandma, I have an early meeting with a client tomorrow,” Natalie tried to explain. “It would be inconvenient to travel from here. I promise I’ll come back and spend time with you after work tomorrow, okay?”

Suddenly, Charlotte pressed a hand to her forehead. “Oh, my head is starting to hurt. Your massages are the best, Natalie. Could you just stay tonight and give me one more?”

Natalie looked over at Alexander, hoping he would intervene. Surely he didn’t want to share a room with her either. She tried to signal him with her eyes, urging him to say something to his grandmother.

“Your head hurts? Let me help you to your room to rest,” Alexander said, walking over and helping Charlotte to her feet.

What was that supposed to mean? Did he not understand her signal?

Just then, Savannah Davis approached her, her voice dripping with reluctance. “Since your grandma has asked you to stay, then you will stay. Besides, if you’re going to put on a show, you might as well make it convincing. Just don’t get any foolish ideas or start wanting things you can’t have.”

Alexander had already explained his grandmother’s wish to his parents at the hospital. The entire family was now expected to play along. As much as Savannah disliked Natalie, she had to consider Charlotte’s health.

With that, Savannah instructed a maid to prepare their bedroom again.

Gabriel Ramirez finished a phone call and saw Natalie standing alone in the living room. He walked over to her.

“Natalie, I know that you and Alexander have lost your feelings for each other. I appreciate you agreeing to do this while your grandmother is unwell. If you are truly determined to get a divorce, I will help you talk to Alexander.”

Gabriel was a reasonable man. He had never placed all the blame for the failed marriage on her shoulders. He even respected her decision, and for that, Natalie was grateful.

“Thank you, Mr. Ramirez. Grandma has always been very kind to me. Even after Alexander and I separate, I will continue to look after her.”

From a short distance away, a sharp cough cut through the air.

Natalie looked over to see Alexander standing in the doorway of Charlotte’s room, his expression dark.

“Grandma is still waiting for her massage.”

She wondered what had set him off this time.

“Mr. Ramirez, I’ll go and give Grandma her massage now.” After all, they weren’t divorced yet. It felt right to address him formally.

“Go on.”

Realizing her words had agitated Charlotte again, Natalie quickly backpedaled. “No, no, of course not. I wasn’t lying to you.”

She immediately called for Hazel to bring Charlotte’s medication.

Alexander, who had been reviewing documents on the sofa in the outer room, heard the commotion and came in.

“Grandma, is your heart bothering you?”

Charlotte looked up at him. “Do I look comfortable to you?”

Alexander’s gaze shifted to Natalie, who looked tense. “What did you say to her?”

Natalie felt a pang of guilt. It was her words that had caused this.

“I…”

“You fool,” Charlotte snapped at Alexander, “always so quick to blame others. Am I not your grandmother? All you do is sit there with your documents. Did you not want to come in and see me?”
