Alexander found Natalie's comment a bit cryptic and glanced over at her.
"Who are 'other people'?"
"No one. It was just a random comment."
He stared at her for a long moment. "You're not telling me something."
Natalie knew he would see through her and regretted her impulsive words. But since she'd already said it, she had to stick to her story.
"I just meant that there will always be people who aren't picky. Even if I don't like their bags, they'll still sell them," she explained, forcing the words out.
Alexander just kept looking at her. Natalie felt a wave of pressure and looked away, trying to think of an excuse to get him to drive, when his phone rang.
He answered it.
"Grandma."
"I just finished my check-up at the hospital. Come and get me," Charlotte Roberts's voice came through the speaker.
The previous topic was dropped as they drove to The Ramirez Hospital.
"Natalie? You came to pick me up too? Wonderful!" Charlotte Roberts beamed like a child when she saw Natalie was also there.
Natalie quickly went to support her. "How are you? What did the doctor say?"
"Same old story. I felt a bit better for a while, but I've been feeling unwell these past two days, so I came in for a check-up."
Natalie's brow furrowed. She was at The Ramirez Estate a couple of days ago, and Grandma seemed happy. Had her leaving made Charlotte's mood worsen?
Seeing Natalie's worried expression, Charlotte said, "It's nothing. This is what happens when you get old. But just seeing you makes me feel halfway better already. Look, I'm happy right now."
In the car, Natalie sat in the back with Charlotte. Alexander started the engine.
"I'll take you back to The Ramirez Estate."
"Well?" Charlotte asked, looking at her expectantly.
Natalie finally nodded. "Okay."
Susan was delighted to see both Charlotte and Natalie back and hurried to the kitchen to prepare dinner. After helping Charlotte settle in her room, Natalie came out to find Alexander waiting for her.
"I'll have someone pick up your things later."
"Okay," Natalie nodded. She had left this villa so decisively, clearing out everything that was hers. It was ironic that she was now moving back in.
"With Grandma here, you can't stay in the guest room," Alexander added.
Natalie understood. "I know. There's a sofa in the bedroom. I can sleep there."
After dinner, it was already late. Natalie chatted with Charlotte for a while before heading upstairs to the master bedroom. The moment she stepped inside, a flood of memories—good and bad—rushed over her. It took a few moments for her to compose herself before walking in.
Alexander wasn't there; he was probably in the study. The auction was the next morning. Natalie opened a small closet built into the wall. She used to have a habit of storing spare items there, including an extra bathrobe. It seemed Alexander had kept up the habit. She took it out and went into the bathroom. When she came out, she froze.
