Chapter 7

The police dog followed my scent up the mountain and finally stopped halfway up the slope.

ust as the dog slowed its pace, sniffing around to pinpoint the trail, Mom’s phone rang.

Officer William, get me back to the hospital right now! We have enough blood-I need to operate on Lily immediately!”

After hanging up. Mom looked frantic, she even grabbed Officer William by the arm and started pulling him back down the mountain.

let out a long breath without thinking.

hank God. They were leaving before finding anything.

When they reached the hospital, Mom jumped out of the police car and bolted toward the emergency room.

With a sharp bark, the police dog sprinted after her into the ER.

y the time officer William caught up, Mom was on the operating table, holding Lily tightly in her arms.

he dog was barking furiously at a gurney piled high with blood bags.

Officer William, please get that dog out of here. I need to operate on Lily.”

Tom didn’t dare raise her voice. She just gestured with her lips, speaking in a tight whisper.

eeing Officer William’s silent, unmoving response, my heart sank.

he secret I never wanted Mom to discover was about to be exposed.

fficer William walked over to the gurney and began picking up each blood bag to examine it. The moment he did, the dog stopped barking.

Tom’s expression flickered. She seemed to realize something too.

I’ll need to take these with me for now. We can do the surgery tomorrow. Is that all right?”

fficer William gestured at the cart full of blood bags, seeking Mom’s approval.

Tom’s mouth opened and closed, but no words came out.

Mom, no…”

ily tugged desperately at Mom’s sleeve, her voice breaking.

I don’t want to wait until tomorrow. I want the surgery today.”

Right now.”

fom stared blankly at her.

his time, Mom didn’t immediately agree the way she always had.

saw a flash of panic, tension, and unease flicker across Lily’s face.

When Mom didn’t respond, Officer William picked up the insulated case used for storing blood and began loading the bags into it.

seeing this, Lily immediately yanked out her IV, jumped off the operating table, and threw her body over the remaining blood bags. She screamed at the top of ier lungs:

You can’t take them! This blood is keeping me alive!”

Then she turned to Mom, sobbing hysterically:

“Mom, save me! Don’t let him take it!”

“Mom!”

“Save me!”

But Mom just stood there, frozen like a lifeless puppet.

I stood beside Lily, frantic and helpless. For the first time, I wanted to help her to stop Officer William from taking the blood.

Officer William rubbed his forehead and said gravely, “I’ll return everything in two hours. It won’t affect the surgery at all

He looked up at Mom.

dom seemed to snap out of it. She stepped forward and pulled Lily aside. “A dog just came into this operating room. Even if you wanted the surgery now, we ouldn’t do it”

Two hours. That’s just enough time to sterilize the room.”

Then I’ll operate on you right away.”

Tom’s words sounded like reassurance, but her tone left no room for argument.

aly opened her mouth, but in the end, she stiffly stepped aside and let go.

he watched helplessly as Officer William took every last blood bag with him.
