Chapter 4

“Mom, I’ll be good! I won’t make you mad anymore!”

I begged, shoulders shaking so hard I thought I’d fall apart. “Please don’t leave me-”

Fear made my legs useless. But I still had to climb into the trunk.

A filthy dog chain wrapped around my neck. Locked me in place.

Mom stared down at me. Her fingers-cold, trembling-brushed my cheek.

And then she smiled. First time I’d ever seen it. Her voice turned soft. Sweet.

“Sera, baby. Mommy just needs to borrow your life for a bit. Don’t be scared…”

The car roared to life. Tore down the winding back roads like a demon.

The chain scraped my neck raw. Blood seeped through the gaps. Every bump sent me crashing into the walls-bruises blooming on my forehead, one after another.

“Mom… it hurts. Please stop.”

“SHUT UP! Just SHUT THE HELL UP!”

Mom’s scream was venomous. Unhinged. “I’m NOT your mom! You were NEVER my daughter!”

“Eight years. Every single second, I wanted to strangle you. Rip your skin off piece by piece. Swallow you WHOLE!”

I went quiet. Stared at the back of her head. Felt my heart clench.

‘Why aren’t you talking now, huh? You little bitch-that bastard sent you to torture me, didn’t he? So I’m gonna KILL you!”

My fingers twitched. I looked down at my bloody hands.

‘Mom…” My voice was barely a whisper. “Okay.”

The car screeched to a halt.

Footsteps pounded toward us. Dad’s voice-furious, desperate.

Are you INSANE?!”

You know what happens! She dies, fine-but YOU’LL get arrested!”

Silence.

The trunk flew open. Dad’s cold eyes landed on me.

Open your mouth.”

He shoved an entire bottle of white pills down my throat. Mom watched, eyes gleaming with anticipation.

swallowed.

She grinned. Wild. Thrilled.

Moments later, I screamed. Curled up. Coughed blood.

Mom thought it was working. Started dancing around like she’d won.

Dad just stood there. Eyes dead.

But then-his phone rang.

The butler’s terrified voice shattered everything.

“Sir! We found him-the guy who assaulted Mrs. Hunt!”

“But he says…

“He never touched her. Not once. There’s no way he’s the father.”

Dad’s heart lurched. Froze

“You found that asshole?”

Mom’s lips shook. Twisted face finally showing wild joy. “Go home. NOW!”

I’m gonna kill him myself!”

Dad didn’t move. Grabbed Mom’s wrist. Voice heavy. “Did you hear what he said?”

Mom stopped. Voice hoarse. “What?”

That guy… said he never touched you.”

So this kid…”

ill bottle slipped from Mom’s hand. She grabbed the phone, screaming. “Put him ON! He raped me-thinks I forgot?!”

call reconnected. On the other end of the line, there was nothing but silence.

Mom kept screaming-cursing, sobbing, her voice cracking with rage-but whoever it was just… waited.

Finally, after what felt like forever, a voice came through. Calm. Almost pitiful.

Your delusions… still haven’t gone away?”
