“Why? If you’re not satisfied with the investigation results about Layla, I can have Zane look into it again. Why are you moving out?”
Finn’s tall figure blocked Tess’s way, his dark eyes full of turmoil.
“Why?”
This time, Tess didn’t ignore him. She arched her brow and stared at him coldly.
“Do you think you’re the only one who feels wronged? I’m Layla’s mother. I love her more than anyone, and I know better than anyone who is out to get her. Finn, you’re the head of Lock Group, the richest man in Aetheris. You’re supposed to be smart–how could you possibly let Nadine fool you with such a clumsy cover–up?
“Admit it. You just want to take Nadine’s side. It doesn’t matter if it’s me or Layla–neither of us will ever compare to her, will we?”
Her voice was distant and cold, like melting snow on a mountain.
Hearing this, Finn opened his mouth to respond, but nothing came out. It was like the words got stuck in his throat.
“I agreed to come back to Evermount Villa for Layla’s safety. And now, for the same reason, I can also choose to leave.”
She withdrew her gaze, cold and resolute. Then she walked off with Layla to pack their things in the bedroom.
The door slammed behind her, sounding like a slap to Finn’s face.
Abel didn’t follow. He simply stood there with his arms crossed, staring Finn down.
Finn pressed his lips together, wanting to chase after Tess, but Abel shifted lazily, blocking his
way.
Abel’s tall frame became a mountain in Finn’s path–blocking both his sight and his heart. Suddenly, Finn couldn’t understand what was going through Tess’s mind anymore.
The two men were about the same height, their gazes locked–neither was willing to back down.
“Move aside.”

Finn finally broke the silence, his voice rough as if he hadn’t spoken in ages.
Abel shook his head. “She doesn’t want to see you.”
The next moment, Finn grabbed Abel’s collar. His eyes were bloodshot with rage.
“Evermount Villa is my property. Are you seriously going to stand in my way?”
His expression turned harsh, showing a side Abel had never seen before.

But Abel only paused for a second, his smile fading slightly, then he stood his ground. “Until Tess leaves here safely, I won’t let her see anyone she doesn’t want to.”
The two of them faced off, the air around them growing cold and tense.
Knock knock.
Moments later, Tess’s knock broke the silence.
She opened the door just a crack. “Abel, come help me move these boxes.”
Tess’s voice was cool and direct, as if giving orders to Abel was second nature by now.
Abel showed no hint of annoyance at being bossed around. In fact, he hurried after her, pausing only to glance back at Finn. “Coming.”
Finn watched them go, his fists clenched so tightly his knuckles nearly cracked.
But before he could move, a commotion erupted at the door.
The moving crew Tess had hired had arrived.
Tess soon came out with Abel, carrying a few bags and boxes. She didn’t spare Finn a single glance.
“Tess.”
Finn called out to her, unwilling to give up, but he was blocked by the flood of moving crew members.
“Ms. Ember, put it down! I’ve got it!”
As soon as the movers saw Tess’s pretty face, their eyes lit up, all of them eager to help.
There were about three or five of them. They all gathered around Tess, eager to carry her

things.
Finn’s voice was drowned out by the busy, cheerful workers.
“Ms. Ember, you’re so young and successful! I can’t believe you live here!”
They looked around in awe.
“So you’re moving out?”
Tess just smiled without answering.

Abel quickly squeezed out a worker who tried to get to Tess’s right side and stood beside her, looking relaxed as ever.
The moving crew worked quickly and never missed a chance to compliment Tess and Layla. The atmosphere felt light and easy.
Even Tess, who’d been so tense before, finally began to relax. The smile on her lips was no longer just polite. She was genuinely happy.
Abel had always been proud. Although he usually acted silly and goofy around Tess, he was actually a cold person deep down. Now, even he was affected by the good mood–though mostly because of the woman beside him.
His eyes lingered on the curve of her smile, and before he knew it, he was smiling too.
Finn watched as those people crowded around Tess, carrying her farther and farther away. Suddenly, a wave of panic struck him. He felt like Tess was leaving for good.
His pupils contracted, but his feet were frozen in place.
At some point, Abel glanced back, then turned away again.
He didn’t know how Tess and Finn had ended up together, but he knew one thing for certain- he wouldn’t let anyone or anything hurt Tess.
Even if it was Finn.
Abel’s gaze landed on Tess once more, filled with a mix of fondness and longing even he couldn’t fully explain.
