Nicholas and his wife looked pale and worn out, their faces showing the toll of a hard and hopeless life.
Jackson, realizing what was really going on, suddenly became a lot more polite.
"At the time, there were special orders," he explained carefully. "They weren't treated as regular workers, so their jobs were easy—nothing loud or exhausting."
As he spoke, Steven glanced around.
Sure enough, everyone else was drenched in sweat, busy with heavy labor. Compared to them, Nicholas and his wife had it easy. Too easy.
They weren't brought here to work at all. This was a different kind of imprisonment.
Steven's eyes darkened. "Have they been here the whole time? Did they ever meet anyone else?"
Jackson rubbed his chin, thinking. "The supervisor who brought them here checks in every now and then. He's an old friend of mine. Each time he comes by, he just takes a quick look, then goes to my office for tea."
"Hmm," Steven stepped back, his expression unreadable.
"If anything happens here, tell me immediately. And what we talked about today, don't breathe a word of it to anyone."
Jackson's face turned serious at once. "Of course. I understand. I'll keep my mouth shut."
Steven finally gave a small, satisfied nod.
Standing nearby, Duncan stared at the two of them, completely lost.
Wait! Isn't Uncle Jackson supposed to catch this guy? Why did it suddenly look like we are on the same team?
He scratched his head, trying to recall some smart saying, but his brain was empty except for one: birds of a feather flock together.
Steven started walking away, but after one step, he reached out and grabbed Duncan by the collar.
Once again, Duncan was dragged forward like a helpless lamb to the slaughter.
He gritted his teeth and gave his uncle a desperate look, silently begging for help. Jackson wouldn't even glance his way. Instead, he rubbed his hands together nervously and called out to Steven's back, "Hey! What you said earlier about my factory! Is that true?"
Steven stopped but didn't turn around. "Yes."
Jackson hesitated for a moment, then blurted out, "Are you the one behind it? If this thing works out, what happens to me? I helped you today!"
Steven finally turned his head just enough for Jackson to see his sharp, defined profile. "I'll remember that," he said calmly. "You'll get your share."
Jackson's face broke into a wide grin. "Ah, thank you, thank you!" he said, nodding like a man who'd just been promised a fortune.
Duncan watched the whole thing, speechless. His uncle looked like a total suck up, but he didn't dare say a word. After all, his collar was still in Steven's grip.
In the end, he could only accept his fate, dragged along as Steven pulled him out the door.
Duncan had been hoping Steven would keep pretending to be a regular worker and head off to Zone A for his shift. Instead, Steven smiled as he threatened Duncan to use his connections to stay in the dorm and rest.

Gosh! He's finally gone.
