Lexie’s POV
It had been three days since I sent my resume to Rick, and I hadn't received any response. Maybe it was time to try an employment agency and see if I could find something. Manu was super sweet and let me borrow her car since Flavian had been driving her everywhere due to the drama with her mother, so getting around would be much easier.
I printed some resumes, researched a few employment agencies online, got myself ready, and went out to face the battle, as they say. I had a plan and I would make it happen. I would get a job, have my own apartment, and my parents would never force me to do anything I didn't want to do ever again. It couldn't be that hard. But I was wrong.
At the first employment agency, I had an interview and took one of those annoying psychological tests, and in the end, they said they would contact me if something matching my profile came up, but it would be difficult. This habit that HR people have of treating us like some profile they define who knows how sometimes puzzles me.
I went to the second agency, where there was actually a position that really interested me, but the recruiter said I was overqualified and therefore wasn't suitable for the position, claiming I wouldn't stay in the job long. That's a thing, right? They think jobs grow on trees and you'll just take off after two or three months in a position because there's something better waiting for you somewhere else. But what if there isn't? What if that job you're overqualified for is the only one that comes along in, like, I don't know, a year or two? I really don't understand these recruiters.
At the third agency, they didn't even interview me. Once again, I was overqualified and didn't fit the type of positions they offered. I was starting to regret studying abroad and doing all those specializations and internships. Maybe I should omit certain things from my resume, like the fact that I speak eight languages.
I was at a coffee shop in the middle of the afternoon, sighing over a cappuccino, frustrated and disappointed with all the doors slammed in my face. I had been to six employment agencies, and I didn't fit the profile for anything. If I had known that preparing to be a top executive would cost me a simple job, I would have quit studying after high school and accepted the destiny my mother had mapped out for me – being a mother and wife. But who was I kidding? I would never accept what my mother wanted.
"You know what, I'm going to the mall to try for a sales position. I did that when I was younger, I can do it again." I finished my cappuccino and paid the bill, but before leaving the coffee shop, my phone rang.
"Hello?" I didn't recognize the number. Could it be that some agency took pity on me and decided to give me a job?
"Lexie, this is Rick from Group Miller." I heard the voice on the other end of the line, but I was so discouraged that I thought he was calling to reject me.
"Hi, Rick. How are you?"
"Good. I'd like to schedule an interview with you, about the job that Alexander has for you. When would you be available?" I broke into a huge smile; he said there was a job for me. I wanted to scream with joy.
"I can be there now. I'm very close by," I replied excitedly, trying not to shout.
"Perfect! I'll be waiting for you."
I said goodbye to Rick and rushed to my car. In less than fifteen minutes, I was walking into the company building. I checked in at reception and received a badge. I stepped into the elevator with renewed confidence - I could and would do this. I would be independent and live my own life. I kept this mantra in my head to stay focused on what was important.
"Lexie!" Manu stood up to greet me as I exited the elevator. "I'm glad you got here quickly. Look, I can't tell you anything in advance, but keep an open mind, listen to the offer, and remember it's just a job."
"What do you mean, Manu..." I found her words strange, but I didn't have time to ask because Rick appeared.
