Flavian’s POV
When the detective stepped into the square, I became alert. I had already figured the woman would call him. He came to save Rita from public humiliation and would do anything she ordered. However, he wasn't counting on me being ready to counter him. I had just received a brief report from Detective Bonfim. The Secretary of Public Safety wasn't pleased to learn that the detective was controlling the town as if we were still in the days of colonels' rule, and conducted a quick investigation into his activities, which was enough to reveal how much he was breaking the law and overstepping his authority.
"Oh great, another one thinking he's important!" Melissa mocked, and the detective turned purple with rage.
"You're all under arrest." When he took a step toward them and signaled to the officers accompanying him, I intervened.
"Touch a single hair on their heads and the Secretary of Public Safety will personally come to arrest you for all these years of misconduct, corruption, and illegal actions in this town!" My voice rose above all the murmuring in the square.
"Detective Moreno!" He looked at me with disgust. "Do you have any evidence against me?"
"Not just one piece, I have plenty. But it's not even necessary - just the house you live in and the luxury cars you and your family flaunt are enough, they're incompatible with your income, and you have no financial backing to justify them." He looked at me suspiciously. "Well, I do my homework!"
"I see! But it's my duty to contain this mess, and these women are causing a disturbance in the town I'm obligated to protect." He still tried to justify himself to me.
"I already told you, don't dare touch them!" I reaffirmed.
"You're defending these little women when you don't even know where they came from?" The detective provoked me.
"Who told you I don't know? You're the one who's poorly informed. Let me make the introductions. Catherine Miller, Samantha Martin, Melissa Larson. Notice anything? Miller, Martin, and Larson? Three of the country's largest fortunes! But of course, you already know Olivia Blanco, a model for the world's biggest brands, a star who landed in this town for your privilege. So, detective, even if I didn't have anything against you, do you really want to pick a fight with these families? Their husbands are right over there." I looked at him as he stared at me in shock.
"Miller, Martin, and Larson?" He asked, and I nodded. "What kind of mess are you getting me into, Flavian?"
"They're my friends, detective." I stared him down.
"Look, I understand you're looking for Manuela, but I think she's making fools of you all. She's probably out there somewhere, drunk at some college party with her friends. But you don't need to turn this into a public spectacle." He stared at me as if he owned the truth.
"You piece of shit! You have no idea who you're dealing with." I lunged at him, but Alexander and Rick held me back before I could hit him.
"Calm down, Flavian! Look here, detective, go back to your police station and lock yourself in there. Let Flavian find Manuela. But don't get involved in this, and don't lay a finger on any of these women, or I'll personally make sure to launch an investigation against you." Alexander stared him down, and he backed off.
"Just end this commotion in the square," the detective requested.
"Very well, detective, we'll let your little friend go, but our business with her isn't finished. Maybe we'll publish everything in the newspaper." Melissa faced the detective and turned to the girls. "Let's move out, troops! Oh, and citizens, watch out for these amateur gunslingers!"
And as if she were the queen and sovereign of the people, Melissa led the line and started making her way through the crowd, stopping to talk to people here and there, confirming everything they had said about Rita. And as Rita passed by, trying to dodge the onlookers, she was booed.
We returned to Cam's house, and he was still looking at the girls in disbelief. They were having fun remembering Rita's face.
"Look, I think we should make a flyer listing all the lies and schemes of that demon and distribute it around town," Olivia suggested.
"Oli, let's not get too worked up." Cam laughed at his wife who was excited about their new allies.
"Not a chance! I haven't beaten her up yet only because we haven't found Manu, but just wait, Cam. Just wait!" Melissa tossed her hair over her shoulder.
