Ninety minutes later, Juniper was shaking her head at how fast her father and Phineas made things happen. Janice was fluffing Juniper’s dress, Suki was playing with her hair, and Veronica was clasping jewelry around her neck and wrist.

Veronica looked at Janice, “can you believe she’s actually going to marry these three? One is bad enough but three? Juniper, blink if you’re being coerced. We can sneak you out of here and nobody would know until we had you in the air on your way to Tahiti.”

Juniper giggled, “I’ll be fine.”

“She can manage him,” Janice commented. “He’s been trying to call her to his office every day this week and she puts him in his place easy peasy. Also, can I just say, I really like her influence on him. He’s always a bastard to work for but he’s actually been pretty tolerable this week. I’m sorry, Juniper but my loyalty is to myself. I want him to continue being nice so I’m dragging you down the aisle if I must.”

“Call me next time. I know where he is almost all the time.” A knock on the door of the bathroom the courthouse made them look over their shoulders and Maeve stepped in, “hey Mama.”

“Well, then let’s get going. The clerk we’re meeting who let us into the space is exhausted. Fermín is making it worth his while, but you can tell he’d rather be anywhere but here.”

They all walked down the hall to the little room outside a courtroom, and a small table was set up.

Maeve tucked Juniper’s hand in her elbow, “I’m walking you into this one, because it’s the real one and it’s more important,” she grinned at Juni, “and your father can walk you to them next weekend.”

“I like that, Mama.” She stopped her as the other women entered ahead of them. “I love you Mama. I don’t know if I tell you enough, but I love you and I appreciate you and I’m the luckiest woman on the planet to have you with me.”

“I know you love me, Juniper. I love you too. I feel our relationship improves every single day.” She kissed her cheek. “Let’s get you married to the men you love but you need to know, any time that you feel this is no longer what you want, you tell me and I will move heaven and earth to get you out.”

“I know, Mama.” She looked to the trio of men waiting for her with a man she didn’t know. Her mother walked her to them, and she slipped her hand into Phineas.

“Hi sweetheart.”

“Hi Phineas.”

“We need to sign these papers with this fellow. Then he’s going to give us the room so Gonzalo will read our vows and he’ll notarize everything. Then we’ll be married.”

“Okay.” A flurry of excitement rose up in her chest, and she rested her hand against her belly, “I’m really excited.”

“I’m very glad to hear this.”

“We also have your name change documents here,” Gonzalo winked at her. “We were discussing whether Perez–Aguado sounded better than Aguado–Perez.”

She giggled at his teasing and then stood next to Phineas as she was encouraged to sign her name on the lines the clerk pointed out to her. The clerk asked both her and Phineas multiple questions which they both answered solemnly and then he smiled.

“This is your marriage license. I’ll let you finish the ceremony with Gonzalo. Congratulations.”

He left and told Fermín to come to his office and let him know when they were ready to leave.

Compromise Part II

Gonzalo waved to the three men, “I’m going to read out the vows. I want you to repeat them with your own names. Juniper, we’ll get you to do the same thing, but you’ll need to say all three of their names.”

Juniper wasn’t sure how she managed to get through the vows they all exchanged but she cried real tears of joy when the men surprised her with a wedding band for her and three bands for her to slide on their fingers. Then they each gave her the sweetest kisses to seal their vows.

“We’re actually married.”

“We’re actually married.” Phineas commented as he used his thumb to wipe her tears away. “I love you.”

“I love you too.” She gave a shaky breath, “I love you all so much.”
