Juniper made a grumbly face as Beni moved to take her hand and help her out of the car.
“Why are you cranky.”
“Because I didn’t want to ever see his ugly face again.”
“Technically, he’s not ugly,” Adil said. “Is he a scheming bastard? Yes. Is he ugly? No. You couldn’t be with an ugly dude, Juni. You have standards.”
“True but I still don’t want to see him.”
They were getting ready to enter the courthouse where Kyst was going to be sentenced. For the last three months, he’d been in jail pending trial, and he’d remained there once the trial was underway, which had been ongoing for the last three weeks. Then yesterday he’d been found guilty of forty–five counts of fraud for scamming of the twenty–nine different women who came forward, in the amount of three million dollars total.
“I know you don’t want to see him, but the prosecutor asked you for a victim impact statement. I feel you should do it for closure.”
“You want me to sway the judge,” she muttered as she took Phineas‘ elbow and let him escort her up the stairs.

“Yeah I do. I hope he gets life imprisonment with no chance of parole forever.”
“It doesn’t work that way Phineas,” Beni laughed at Phineas‘ diabolical laugh. “He’s likely to get two years and ordered to pay restitution.”
“I like life better.”
They entered the courthouse together and immediately Juniper saw Gonzalo talking to the prosecutor at the far end of the hall. They passed through the metal detectors, and she made her way to her father–in–law and straight into his hug.
“There’s my favorite daughter–in–law.”
“Hi Gonzalo.” She kissed his cheek.
“How are you feeling sweetie? How’s the morning sickness?”
“It’s okay.”
“Do you think you’ll be okay on the stand?”
“So long as I don’t smell eggs when I’m up there, I’m good.”
“Let’s pray the judge hasn’t eaten eggs for breakfast then,” he rubbed her head gently. He looked at Beni, Phineas, and Adil.

“Are you taking care of her every need?”
“Yes Dad.”
“The twelve–week checkup was good?”

“Yes. Everyone is thriving.” Phineas laughed at Gonzalo’s attitude. All three of their fathers joined Fermín in being incredibly overprotective of Juniper to the point all three of her husbands were constantly being questioned as to whether or not they were behaving in a manner befitting their wife. The moment they all realized they were going to be grandfathers they were overbearing, to say the least.
“You let us know if you’re feeling unwell at all,” Gonzalo insisted to her. “We’ll make sure you’re taken care of.”
“I’ll be fine,” she offered reassuringly.
“Juniper?”
The voice made her turn her head and she noted all four men moved to stand in front of her to block the sight.
“Oh, my goodness,” she muttered as she pushed past them. “We just walked through a metal detector. Pretty sure Lois isn’t going to shoot me. Move.” She wedged her way past Phineas but grunted when he grabbed her arm and held her tight to his side.

“I don’t trust her.”
“I’m not afraid of her.”
“Juniper. I thought that was you. You came to the sentencing hearing?”
“I was asked to attend.” She held her chin up and looked at the woman who used to be her mother–in–law. The woman had aged tremendously in the last three months. In spite of the makeup she was wearing, her eyes were wrinkled and tired, with a bluish tint. Her lips were pinched and to Juniper it seemed she’d kept them pursed day and night and they’d stuck like this. Her hair was done but not meticulous as it was before. She was suffering under the strain of her husband and son’s behaviors. “I was asked to provide a victim impact statement on how Kyst’s manipulations affected me and my life.”
“But you weren’t involved. He didn’t scam you out of money.” Lois frowned in confusion.
“No. He simply cheated on me and hid the proceeds of his cheating while he manipulated me.” Juniper watched Lois‘ lips tighten angrily. “Speaking of cheating, where is Carl?”
“He’s parking the car.”
“Glad you could work things out. Not everyone would be as forgiving as you could be.”

“Must you do this, Juniper? You’re kicking him while he’s down.”

“I hope they throw the book at him. He’s not sorry, Lois. He has no remorse. He’s been denying encouraging the women to give him money, despite the proof the prosecutor provided. All these women testifying what he said to them, how he manipulated and coerced them and he still won’t own up to his immoral behavior. He allegedly told the courtroom, he was doing everything for his wife who wasn’t there today, but she would eventually understand he hadn’t done anything wrong. He was providing for her. He has no remorse.”
“People have those OnlyFans accounts.”
“Where people know what they are signing up for. Kyst set up a website which lured his former clients to what they thought was a private chat. He made them all think they were special. None of them realized it was a group thing.” She shifted in her stance and moved to hold her belly.
