**Chapter 27: Skyline Elite Member**
Derek felt a surge of fury bubbling within him, a tempest ready to break free. But before he could unleash his wrath, Lydia intervened with a firm grip on his arm. “Derek, listen to me. Even if Helen is trying to take my fiancé away, I can’t bring myself to blame her. She’s been through hell and back. Leaving the Morgans wasn’t easy for her, and I can only imagine how hard it must be to let go of a life that once offered her everything. She’s desperate for money, and that desperation can drive anyone to make regrettable choices…”
With a determined shove, she pressed the bank card into Helen’s palm. “Helen, please, stop digging your own grave. You were once part of the Morgans, and I genuinely don’t want to see you tarnish our family’s name over something as trivial as cash. Just take it. If you’re willing to put in the effort, things can turn around for you…”
But before Lydia could finish her plea, Helen retaliated, flinging the card back at her with a swift motion.
The sound of plastic hitting Lydia’s face was sharp, echoing like a slap that reverberated through the tense air.
Lydia instinctively brought a hand to her cheek, gasping at the sudden sting.
In an instant, before anyone could process the scene, Helen seized Lydia by her hair, wrenching her out of Derek’s protective embrace with a brutal force.
Smack!
The resounding blow of Helen’s hand against Lydia’s face was unforgiving.
Then, with a swift motion, she forced Lydia down, pressing her head against the cold, hard ground.
With a sickening thud, Lydia found herself on her knees, the world tilting dangerously around her.
“Helen, you…!” Derek’s voice trembled with unbridled rage, his jaw clenched tight as he struggled to contain his fury.
Helen, with a cruel smile, stomped down on Lydia’s head, pinning her mercilessly to the floor. She looked down at her with icy disdain. “Stop pretending to be some kind of saint in front of me. Just seeing that fake, sweet face of yours makes me want to retch.”
“And one more thing…”
A mocking grin spread across her features, sharp as a knife. “Don’t ever call me by my first name again. We’re not friends.”
“Helen!”
Derek’s patience snapped, and he lunged forward, fueled by a mix of anger and protectiveness. “Let go of Lydia, right now!”
As he charged, he spat venomous words like arrows aimed at her heart. “Who’s the real jinx here? It’s you! You were thrown out of the Morgans for a reason. After all these years with us, what have you ever done for our family? Lydia just returned, and suddenly the Walcotts are interested in collaborating with us.”
“You know the Walcotts, don’t you? They’re the wealthiest family in Veridia, light-years beyond your grasp!”
“With their backing, we’ll ascend to the heights of elite status in no time. A jinx like you would only bring misfortune to our doorstep!”
He raised his fists, poised to strike, his heart pounding with adrenaline.
But in a swift, unexpected move, Helen’s leg shot out, landing a brutal kick right in Derek’s gut.
